Xciting 500 / Re: Belt life
« on: March 21, 2015, 03:26:38 AM »
Got north of 22k miles on my original belt.  Will check it this year before riding.  I believe SissyMary has an original belt with over 30k miles.  Hopefully he will chime in.  Good luck with the belt.

Close to 22k miles on my "all original" 500, and going strong.

I suspect it is your weight.  I live in NE PA and will get 47mpg if I hammer the thing, but, I only weigh 200lbs with "all" of my gear.  Weight is a huge factor.

LOL.  Yes, some of them are anal.  Mostly Harleys in NE PA.  Most of them are cool.  They still like to tease me, but, like Big O, I let them know all of the great things about the 500... that usually shuts them up. ;)

Dido with BigOrange.  I am on my second rear City Grip.  First one I put about 9,100 miles, the second is at about 8,500 miles and can go maybe another 1k miles or so.  Pretty dang good!  I might try Michelin Pilot Pure Power next time.

Wow!  I am shocked at the issues.  I have an 09 Xciting R and only pulled my bell clutch once since I own it... at 13.5k miles back in May of this year.  No issue, just wiped out the dirt from the bell.  Belt looked fine and now have close to 22k miles.  Like Sissy Mary, I do mostly highway miles and way, with gear, about 200lbs.  (I am sure the weight is a big factor).  So sorry to hear of all your issues and wish you luck.

Well said BigOrange.  I could not say it any better than you.  I feel the same way.  The only thing I might consider when mine has many more miles on it, is maybe a BMW 650GT or a MyRoad 700.  And even then, I lean toward the 700 seeing how easy it is to maintain the 500.  Good luck with yours.

Hi Bobyhit,

Welcome to the forum.

I am near Hazleton.  Was just in Muncy this past week.  Send me a message if you feel like riding.

I am at about 20,500 miles... and yes, it was topped off the day before it started to become sluggish.  I filled it the next day, no top off, and after 1/2 tank gone, it started acting up.  Filled it up again since, did the reset of the fuel injection (WOT with key on), changed the air filter (first time) and it seems to be running fine.  Taking a 150 mile trip today.  We'll see what happens.  No news is good news.

4)  Clogged fuel filter - check or replace it (they are cheap).  I like to use clear fuel filters so I can see if there is something in it, or if the filter has become discolored.

Hi JustWantToRide,

You mentioned a clogged fuel filter.  I own an '09 Xciting 500 and cannot locate the fuel filter.  Can you shed some light for me as to the location of the filter?  Any input is appreciated.

I own an '09.  I purchased the bike used, it has an '07 windscreen on it.  It works fine.

If I stay on the highway and drive "spiritedly" I get @ 47mpg.  If I cruise the back roads I get 55-60mpg.

Dumped my twice as well.  First time, just fell over coming down a hill with a load on the back.  No big deal.  Second time on a private road that went to dirt and hit a bump... front end popped up, came down on dirt road and the back slid on it's side about 15 feet.  Was only going about 10 miles an hour.  Mine is still scuffed on the left side and it is staying that way.  As much as I like a trophy machine, this thing is a workhorse and will have a lot of miles on it before I get rid of it.

No issue with mine.  Dealer put a battery in mine April 2011.  Still have the same battery and about 18k miles on it.
