General Discussion / Re: Kymco AK 550 2023 Stolen!!
« on: September 03, 2024, 08:37:26 PM »
What about your Kymco app? Can't you locate your bike through that? I can do it with my AK550....Also its a good idea to put a phone tag hidden on the bike. I can can also trace it through my Samsung Phone. Did you connect your bike to your phone? You should be able to locate it.

Dean

The Kymco app just shows the last location I’ve left the bike. I think it shows where the phone was last connected. The bike doesn’t have gps installed I believe.
I had an AirTag hidden inside but they have found it and most likely removed the battery.

Geez Ben, that's a shame ...and kind of spooky, that these pro-stealers have a way to start something as sophisticated as one of Kymco's mother ship models!

Understandably, and I don't mean this negatively - but, sitting here in rural Ohio - NYC seems like another planet!
They picked it up crossing the G.W. - do they record all the license plates, or is it a toll bridge?

That is not a happy feeling to go out and find your new ride missing!
I was knocking down $128 a month while training to be a medic when I came out to find our only transportation, a new Honda motorcycle, gone! (San Antonio, TX - 1967). My 18 yr old wife kept us alive with her waitressing job at the Travel Lodge diner.

On the Vespa forum - some Londoners have lost as many as 3 new Vespas to theft. Some have given up scooter ownership.

Was your 550 parked where you live - or at work in NYC? Parking garage? Chained?

Of course it doesn't matter. It was taken.

Truly - we feel for you!
Stig

Hey Stig,
Yes they record all the plates crossing. It’s a toll bridge but only one way, coming into the city:)
Bike was parked where I live, not chained. I guess they just started it using the nfc reader.

Really sorry to hear this. One more reason to make absolutely certain to turn off the ignition knob to the left off position!
Fingers dropping off won't be enough. They need to lose both hands!!

My 2022 model has the round keyless knob which has 2 off positions indicated. The "off" to the right does not really turn off the AK but only shuts off the engine and lights for refueling. The remote fob is not needed when using that position to turn off the engine/lights and the bike can be started by simply turning the knob back to center "on" position. I never leave my AK unattended when I turn it off to the right side of the knob.
The "off" to the left actually does turn off the AK and the remote fob IS needed to turn it on. But I also have verified that if my remote fob is within 48 ft in front of the bike my AK will still sense the fob and turn on. I have a RFID pouch to put my fob into when I want to make sure it cannot be sensed by the bike, like when I am camping.
That's all with MY 2022 model.

The 2023 model has the piano key/buttons. I don't know if there is a similar function with 2 "off" settings where one actually turns it off and the other only shuts off the engine and lights. Still sad to know that it was somehow started and stolen.

Hey Bob,
It was the same round keyless knob. The piano keys are only on the premium which is not available in the US.
I had it locked all the way to the left, as always.

Hi Guys,

Unfortunately my Kymco got stolen this morning in NYC. I just got it two months ago and had around 830 miles on it. Color is matte blue, puig windscreen.
Someone was able to start the motorcycle! When the police ran the plates it had passed the George Washington bridge going to NJ riding.

Technical | How To / Re: AK550 J Costa fine tuning
« on: July 09, 2024, 03:30:01 PM »
Wow. 2 gr less will result in a very noticeable difference. Yes, the RPM will be lower. But so will the power... and acceleration. Due to that I'm not so sure the mpg will improve. It might take burning more just to maintain the same speed at a slightly lower RPM. Torque is a function of RPM and output power (and a few other factors). Perhaps better to change to 18 gr from the stock 17 gr.

Hey Bob,

I won’t probably do it:) dealership told me that they will void my warranty:)
Anyways, today I was riding in the rain mode and it got me closer to what I like. Rpm stays at around 3500 at steady speed of around 30-50 mph.
Acceleration is a bit slower but it doesn’t bother me. Now I can ride 30-40mph and the engine is a bit quieter.

Thanks for the replies. Well on my downtown I had little bit lighter than stock dr. Pulley rollers which give me wot at 6500 rpm (peak torque) instead of stock 5500 but apart from that all worked as stock. I know that the J costa works this was that it revs much higher and this is due to the construction of the vario. I don’t know if I have stock clutch but I believe it’s highly probable.

I have the feeling (but only my feeling) that in the Ak the clutch works a little different than in the DT, in particular, doing static tests with the cover removed I saw that the clutch engaged before the vario started to “change the gear”. Here in the AK I believe it needs specific rpm on the clutch input shaft and with stock the vario already changes the “gear” before engagement (the transmission belt’s output disc is much bigger than the input) and the J costa does not as it needs much higher revs to start changing the gear.

I think stiffer contra spring will offset higher slider weight and it will give same specs. I will try to buy a little heavier sliders and see if I am right, fortunately they are not very expensive where I live. 1k less for clutch is all I need and would be nice to keep same revs at wot for performance.

Hey, I just saw this thread. Did you ever replaced the rollers with heavier ones. I have the same issue. I mean it’s not an issue but I would like the rpm’s to be lower if possible. I have the stock variation and planning to install 19 gram rollers, instead of the 17.

Technical | How To / Re: Is rear suspension adjustable AK 550
« on: July 06, 2024, 06:01:40 PM »
OK, OK I'm here.

No, The AK rear shock is not adjustable. It is still a good suspension back there though. If careful measurements are taken of the existing setup you might be able to replace the stock shock with something that is adjustable but I'm not so sure the cost would be worth it or the improvement, if any, would be significant enough to justify doing that.

Thanks Bob.
Yes, upgrading is pretty expensive.
Only option I guess is changing the oil.

General Discussion / Re: Strange instability AK 550

No issues like that with mine. I feel there is about the same weather protection as I had on my Burgman 650. No instability at any speed either... but I've only had it up to just over 85 mph so far.
I do keep the tire psi a little higher than the manual calls for. Instead of 34F/38R I keep the psi at an indicated 37F/39R on the TPMS. I also found the TPMS display is close to 3 psi low compared to a few pencil gauges I have. Normally I  like to keep my motorcycle and super scooter tire psi at 40F/42R per the pencil gauges. I find tires do last a bit longer in my experience doing this and I feel a more solid connection to the road as well. I used to keep the recommended psi but about 20 years ago followed the advice of many riders in my riding groups.

Hey Bob,

Yes, disconnected is maybe the word i was looking:) It feels like it disconnects from the road.
Oh I’ve had it only up to 75 maybe. Not even planning to go above 80:)

« on: June 20, 2024, 02:16:26 PM »
I just replaced the oem screen with the puig screen. Wind protection is way better.
I still get turbulence of wind at lower body, and legs are super exposed. I guess it’s the motorcycle design.
After replacing the screen I noticed very strange instability around 50-60 mph. Feels like the front gets unstable from the wind. I experienced it twice yesterday.
I can’t really explain it, maybe like front wheel shaking or the wind throws you off your path for a second. Weather was nice and clear, even though you feel like it’s very windy on this bike.
Anybody else?

My last tank average said 63.4mpg. Way off!
I refilled at exactly 150 miles, the red E started blinking, 3.2 gallons regular 87.
Average 46.8mpg

Yeah that mileage doesn't help sell the bike as a cross country cruiser.

Stig

lol. For me the sitting position is so bad and the wind is just coming from everywhere. I can barely ride 15 miles. Cross country cruiser 😂😂😂???

Just an update on the mpg. Last bar started blinking on 104 miles Trip A resettled on refueling. Average mpg shows 58.5.
I will ride until I get the blinking E.
As Bob mentioned it will probably get better but let’s see:)
I wouldn’t mind the low mph but refueling and getting the blinking light at 100 miles is terrible.
I need 6 gallons tank:)

Sounds good. I will definitely try the lower position for now but I would like to try the givi screen also. I usually ride in short sleeves and on this bike wind is too much.
I like the premium version windshield but I don’t know if it will fit on this model.

Thanks

As mentioned, you don't need more than 87 octane in the USA.
I used to own a CTX1300. That uses the same engine, basically, as the ST1300. The ST recommends 93 octane but the CTX recommends 87 octane. The difference is the compression ratio... and maybe a few other minor details.

Dr Pulley does make sliders and rollers that will work. Both heavier and lighter. Heavier rollers will decrease the RPM for the same speed. But why change it. The load to the rear wheel will temper any benefit in that so you might consider changing the contra spring as well. There is some information on that over on the ADV Riders forum in the Scooter sub forum. Look for the threads about the AK 550. There are a few owners who changed their rollers to 1-2 grams different to get more out of the CVT but I think I recall they also changed the contra spring. I like the way it is but that's just me as you can tell.

Perfect Bob, thanks.
I will check dr Pulley rollers. I will try first with the rollers than spring if needed. I just spent 13k for this bike:) I like the rpms to be lower and the bike quite. As for the gas, next tank will be 87.
Thanks for your advise.
