Downtown 300 / Engine Fault Code 01 - on LCD
« on: August 12, 2011, 11:32:11 PM »
I have noticed sometimes when I start the engine I get the engine outline icon in the middle of the LCD display with "01" next to it?

I thought it was maybe when I press the starter before the instruments have done their "self test" routine but I notice I get it at other times as well?

I have turned the ignition on and waited for the engine LED to go out - it does not  flash any codes so I assume evrything is OK - but I don't understand why I sometimes get this "01" on the display.

Anybody got any thoughts?

sorry woodbar but my computer has been down for the last few days...

OK - I was starting to wonder where you had gone - strangely enough I have been "off-air" for 2 days - been fitting a new motherboard/processor/graphics/memory in the PC AND updating from XP to Win 7 - I must be a masochist!

Anyway I am glad the info and pics were useful for when you get the 300i - not too long now!

No, luckily the riots have been at least 30 miles away (Bristol being the closest) - I am pretty rural here, thankfully, so have only seen the details on the news.

Nice ride.  I think the box is the right size for the bike

Thanks for the comments.  I am getting between 76 and 84 mpg (UK) from the 300i - in fact now I am giving it a bit more "wellie" I seem to be getting better figures?

I did try a test ride on a used Xciting 500 and I was quite impressed - in the end I decided it was just a bit too bulky/heavy for what I wanted (and I was not sure of the provenance) and opted for the new 300i.  As far as performance comparison I can't really say as I only did a few miles on the 500 but I subscribe to the saying "there's no substitute for horses" so I think the 500 would have more "stamina" shall we say than the 300 - even if it is heavier.

It seems none of the "major brand" importers want to carry any stock!

I had to wait 3 weeks for the Givi rack kit and 4 weeks for the screen - Givi UK nil stock - ordered from Italy!

Only advantage is it seems the delivery time to UK might be a bit quicker than "across the pond" ::)

Hope your bits arrive soon

Here are some pics - sorry they are a bit poor quality - I did not have the time to take the bike out of the garage and "pose" it - but I think you should get the picture ;D

The Kappa K35 is resting on the driver seat in the first shot.

The plastic mounting plate you can see is the "universal mount" that comes with most monolock cases - it is bolted to a metal plate (hidden - you can just see the edge of it at the mounting pillar/spacer in the last shot) which is part of the Givi SR92M rack kit (the SR92 kit is for monokey cases and comes with the plastic plate for those types of box - twice the price though!)

The only problem I had with fitting is the 2 main bolts (which replace the 2 OEM bolts holding the grab rail) were binding seriously in the threads on the bike when I tried to insert them.  Strangely enough both types of bolts would screw easily into any of the M8 nuts I had lying around - anyhow, luckily, I had an M8 plug tap which I used to clean quite a bit of excess metal out of the threads in the frame lugs then it all went together OK.  I guess the tool on Kymcos' threading machine had worn out of spec - lets hope the ones that did the important bits in the engine were OK ???

Hi Roboscoot - yes the cats and the 300i are doing fine thanks.

I have been meaning to reply to a few things on the forum but have only had access on my little Android smartphone for a bit - and that is a real PIA to type on!

The top box IS REMOVABLE - if you look at the picture above with Charlie sitting in the box you can see the lower red button - press this (when the lock is unlocked of course) and the box just lifts straight off.

You can also see in some of the pictures the mounting plate right at the bottom of the box - that is a permanent fixture.

If I get time later I will take a couple of shots of the bike without the box fitted so you can see what the permanent bits look like.

Meanwhile if you look up "monolock system" on google/youtube there are plenty of  details/videos of how it works etc. - be careful as there is also a "monokey" system, which basically does the same thing but, as far as I can tell, is a bit stronger (seems to be mostly bigger boxes) and a lot more expensive!

The 300i has done about 1000 miles now and is still "freeing up" - getting better all the time - although I was a bit concerned the other day - every time I did a quick getaway from the lights it was making a peculiar noise - sort of a cross between a groan and a shriek - only happened a few times then it seemed to settle down to normal?  Only thing I can think of is I had washed the bike before going out, so whether some damp got in to the CVT and belt area.................?

Well as my heading says - I'm in Somerset, in the West country.

They must have sold more than 3 DTs in the UK???

Where is everyone? ???

Hi Frank - and welcome.

Sorry to hear about the Sym but I think you should be pleased with the DT300i.  Funnily enough I was tempted by one of the Sym models at my local dealer - think it was Evo 300 - it seemed nicely finished and had a few more extras - back rest, carpeted storage, hazard flashers etc. - but then I discovered it was actually only 260cc and I did not like the wheels (front smaller than the DT) and I had actually also tried a 2nd hand xciting 500 (only been used by the BBC as mobile camera base for bike racing - tempting but 2 years old) - so I went for the DT!

Thanks for the comments - I wasn't 100% sure about the box but it was a necessity and it's "grown" on me.

The Givi screen is very good - the bottom fixing needs a little adapting - 4 small "O" rings do the job nicely (you'll understand when/if you get one!)  My only reservation is that I am now looking through the top edge of the screen (it is 6.5" taller than stock) and I am debating whether to cut 1.5 - 2" off the top - but I don't want to loose the benefits - less noise, less buffeting - the stock screen was just too low and narrow at the base.  I am 5' 11.5" tall so you can judge what level your eyes might be if you change!

Let us know how you get on with the new DT.

Thanks for the comments roboscoot - yes I know what you mean about the box but I need the extra storage.

We have 3 cats as well (at the moment - it was five) - and let's get this straight Charlie is a black & white ENGLISH shorthair (lol) - he thinks he's a dog anyway - keeps pestering to be taken for a walk across the field next to us!

When do expect to get the DT and what colour have you ordered - what do you ride now?

Likewise, stay safe and keep to the left (UK) - you maybe better keeping to the right?

It's the Kappa K35 and I bought it from DKmotorcycles.co.uk primarily because I thought it was one of the nicer looking 35 litre boxes and it was comparatively less expensive (£60) than most.

It seems to be of reasonable quality - the lock and latching arrangement are identical to the Givi variety.  In fact the mounting rack kit, which was a Givi SR92M also had the Kappa KR920 legend on the instructions so I assume the 2 companies use common parts?

It's still enough to pay for a plastic box, although it does include the Monolock quick release plate as well I suppose, and if you want a coloured top (Silver, Blue or Red) it is twice the price!

Thanks for the replies guys - it's nice to have some feedback.  I'd love to see your pics of the DT with the V46.

I think I could have gone for a slightly bigger case but my main criteria was to Store 1 FF helmet & keep cost down!

I quite liked the Coocase item with built in Alarm/LED/Integral contacts but in the end it was "would be nice"  versus expense limitation.  I may try adding some LEDs myself - or if I get that lucky number on the Lottery buy the bigger Coocase with it all built in.

I was wondering about the HID conversion or whether to try the MTEC Super White bulbs first - any thoughts?

I'll tell Charlie you think he matches well!  I'm not sure if he's trying to tell me something but he insists on sitting on the pillion seat when the bike is parked up at home - trouble is I don't think he would be comfortable in a helmet.

Just a few pictures of the Downtown 300i with a couple of extras now fitted - must stop spending money now - it was supposed to be cheap alternative transport!

How did he get in there?

Sorry it's not in exotic locations like some of the other pics here!

I had read about this so I had 4 small O rings available.

Well that's some consolation - I usually get the faulty kit if there is one!

So basically, although we used our "engineering skills" to overcome the problem, it could be said that the Givi D294ST is NOT actually a complete kit?

Thanks for the tip about rainX - worth knowing - I have been using a good quality non abrasive car polish on the painted panels and screen so I hope that does not make it change colour.

That's the trouble with all the differing legislation - it can be pretty hard to find out what is legal.

I am pleased with the modulator - it gives 15 strobes in the space of 1.5 seconds on first application (pretty fast) - if you reapply the brakes within 10 seconds it just comes on solid.

Now I have the top box fitted I may add some auxilliary rear LEDs which I can also add to the modulator output to give a stop/tail light function - there is a selectable option on the unit which will give 30% brightness with the brakes off and 100% with the brakes on - have seen it in action and is quite impressive.  It obviously means that a single LED (or array) can have the dual function.

The site I got the modulator from also do a motion sensed device - but this is designed to give a hazard flasher function under emergency braking which, strangely enough, IS legal in the UK and EU because several cars on sale I know have this fitted OEM.

Just put on the Givi wind shield so waiting to see how much the milage goes up.

Did you get any sort of fittings or collars with the screen?

What did you think of the fit of the lower mounting bracket?

Yes I take your point on the possible confusion - but this is a fast modulator specifically for LED - it has a flash rate of 10Hz for 1.5 secs - I don't think anyone could imagine you can go on and off the brakes that quick.

On the other hand they might think you've got a dodgy brake switch!
