Downtown 300 / Need Cover Recommendations
« on: November 25, 2014, 01:30:51 PM »
Had a house fire in my garage so my 300i is outside while renovations take place. There are a ton of covers on the market but I was hoping someone had some experience with any that fit the 300i pretty well that they would or would not recommend.

Thanks!

Mine snapped on me on the way to work this morning. Had to push it off the highway (didn't want to leave it there) 2 miles! Glad these things roll easily.

I couldn't find a source online direct from Kymco in Taiwan, can you provide info for that?

This is the second time this has happened to me. This one only lasted 4K miles so not happy with that (although I ride at highway speed way too much). 1st belt lasted 11K miles. When I replaced it, I added DR sliders so not sure if that effected the longevity of my belt but I guess I need to slow down a bit and not push the bike as hard.

Downtown 300 / Seat Interchangeable with Xciting?
« on: June 30, 2014, 04:50:01 PM »
Corbin makes an aftermarket seat for the Xciting 500 that moves the rider position back a few inches. Does anyone know if the seats are interchangeable between bikes?

Anyone know if the seats for the Xciting 500 are interchangeable? Corbin is now making one for that model that moves the seating position back for more legroom.

They are expensive but the only thing I don't like about my DT is the seating position.

I tore into it this weekend, When I pulled the case off my first thought was "Where's the belt?" and "What's this rats nest doing in here?"

The belt was shredded so bad it looked like a rat had chewed it up and made a nest inside. I didn't see any damage and ended up having to remove the Variator to get all of the pieces out but I'm replacing the weights anyway so no big deal there.

Cheapest I could find a belt online was $129 +$10 shipping and my local dealer wanted $146 shipped so I'm supporting my local guy.

What sucks is how nice the weather has been the last few days and not being able to ride!

Downtown 300 / Re: FUEL FLASHING WHEN CLOSE TO EMPTY
« on: October 11, 2013, 11:33:12 AM »
Not very far! Trust me on this, you may have 5 miles depending on how heavy you are, the traffic, the weather, etc. WHen mine starts to flash I immediately pull over for gas.

I've computed how far I can get on a tank of gas before the light starts flashing and always know where and when I'll need gas. They're not hard to push but it's no fun!

Downtown 300 / Sudden loss of power, stranded on the highway!
« on: October 11, 2013, 11:28:54 AM »
On the way home from work yesterday my 300i felt as if it just dropped out of gear as I was passing a car on the highway. I had engine as it would rev fine, no overheat temps showing and no other indications other than I could rev the engine and go nowhere.

I coasted to a stop off the highway and had to trailer the bike home last night. I'm assuming my drive belt broke but without tearing into it I really don't know what's the cause as I've never worked on scooters. The bike has over 12K miles on it so not sure if that's normal mileage for a belt but I do push it pretty hard (a lot of highway miles) so I'm hoping that's my issue.

Any suggestions to troubleshoot and if it is the belt, does anyone have any good sources?

Are you using high octane gas?

I've been using the middle grade, never 87. Never had a problem with that in the past and doubt it's the octane. It acts as if it's starved for fuel.

Downtown 300 / A couple of issues Need some help!
« on: May 04, 2012, 05:23:01 PM »
Up front the issues I have is a sudden loss of power, a coolant leak, and my gas mileage has dropped from 70mpg to 62 mpg.

Today someone told me I had some fluid leaking from my bike so I went out at lunch and saw a small puddle of antifreeze under the bike. Pulled the cover and the reservoir looked almost empty. Not sure why it's leaking but I heard a gurgling sound when I pulled the fuel cap off for another problem I'll go into below.

My bigest issue is the sudden loss of power at highway speed. This has started to be a regular yet intermittent problem. The first time it happened right after filling the tank, got 5 miles down the road and I could hear (and feel) the engine make a sudden fall off in power, speed would drop and I'd have to hold full throttle just to maintain any speed close to 50mph.

If I let the bike sit or turn it off and back on it would clear itself. It then started to happen at different times after a fill up. I ran some seafoam through it and it seamed Ok for a few tanks but happened again on my way in to work this morning.

Someone on the Kymco Yahoo group suggested that it might be the fuel cap vent being clogged. I tried to wiggle it while riding but that did nothing. I was about 3 miles from work this morning on the highway when it happened this morning. I pulled in and popped off the fuel cap and heard this "Gurgling" sound as soon as I pulled off the cap. Then was told at lunch my bike was leaking fluids. DOn't know how the fuel system and cooling system could be connected but I need some help trying to figure out where I need to start troubleshooting.

ANy suggestions would be appreciated.

Downtown 300 / Re: Winter Gear

I'd say 95% of people had those Termoscuds on their scooters and about 65% had the handlebar muffs and about 15% had hand guards or some sort of wind guard. I could have bought all of this stuff while I was in France but the cost was actually higher than buying it online and having it shipped but that was in downtown Paris so prices were probably inflated.

will give a report with pictures once I have everything installed.

Just got back from Paris and was shocked to see everyone riding their scooters in 35 degree (F) temps even in the rain so I took note and decided to make a few purchases:

First are the Tocano Urbano R323 Handlebar Muffs http://www.scootercrazy.com/acatalog/Handle_Bar_Covers.html

Then the Tocano Urbano R078 Termoscud http://scooter-wear.com/tucano-urbano-termoscud-r078-kymco-downtown

Then a Teiz Lombard one piece suit http://store.teizms.com/lombard

Now looking at the Givi windscreen and the Bestem 929 top case but will see how this all fits and works first.

I felt guilty for leaving my scooter garaged when the Parisians were riding.

Downtown 300 / Re: How do you get to the Spark Plug?
« on: August 10, 2011, 01:42:35 PM »
Thanks Guys,

I bought the CR7EIX plugs the other day and will go the seat removal route.

Any of you have a good source for oil filters?

« on: August 08, 2011, 12:31:38 PM »
Went to change the oil and plug this weekend and couldn't figure out the easiest way to get to the plug. I could see it through the slotted panel on the side but wasn't sure if that even came off. It would be easy to change if you can easily remove this panel but it was late and I didn't want to risk breaking something trying to figure it out on my own.

The owners manual tells you how to inspect the plug but not how to remove it and I don't have the service manual.

I also wish there was a universal replacement part for the oil filter. It's impossible to find the HiFlo HF566 anywhere and the dealer wants $28 for an OEM filter  :o

I cleaned the original with Stoddard Solvent (an old trick I learned as a jet engine mechanic) but need to replace it soon. Jenny here on the forums said she has them but it would be nice to be able to get them locally.

Downtown 300 / Re: How much do you pay for insurance?
« on: August 08, 2011, 12:23:18 PM »
$46 every six months for full coverage with State farm. $500 deductible. I have my home and 2 other vehicles on this policy and a great driving record so this helps keep the rates down.

Well, just went through my first "Complete" fuel up and got 68.8 Miles to the gallon! That's pretty good considering it's not completely broke in.  I'm hoping that after break-in and change of oil/plugs that the number will improve.

Not sure how the GIVI windscreen will affect things but I'll probably upgrade this fall. Not going to look into a top box as of yet since My cooler and 2 bungie cords seem to be working out well.
