Super 8 150 / Re: Rear Brake Longevity
« on: June 15, 2016, 05:49:29 AM »
Just replaced my rear tyre about a month ago and found that the thickness of the rear brake pads was more than a couple of millimetres;meaning I haven't worn them off too much after about 7 years and 30000 miles of riding. Replaced the front ones at approx. 30000 miles. I tend to use the front brake much more than the rear. I find the rear brakes feeble & only use it to steady the scooter at walking pace. I have adjusted/tightened that rear nut below several times so that the brake lever does not come all the way into the hand grip.

Yes, 30000 of fairly punishing miles too I must add cos where I live its mostly city riding; plenty of stop & go traffic, plenty of traffic lights, and plenty hot too (about 30 to 34 degrees celcius everyday....). Tyres & brakes take a good beating daily....

Mine's pushing nearly 30000 mostly commuting miles and counting. Engine's OK. Can't say the same about the electrics.....

Didn't know a 120/70 14 could fit the front...otherwise I may have gone for that. I just replaced my tyres cos the rear one was worn till the fabric thread was exposed!! The front one was still OK but both tyres were nearly over 5 yrs old. Got a Metzeler FeelFree 120/80 14 for the rear (Made In Brazil) & an IRC 110/70 14 for the front (Made In Thailand). Both for SGD150/-incl.installation. I thought it was quite a bargain....then I discovered that the Metzeler was made around Jan 2015...... ::). Anyway, I didn't want to spend too much cos I am only keeping the scooter till June 2019, so those new tyres should last till then....hopefully. You see, in my country,U need to purchase a "Certificate of Entitlement" (or COE for short) first before U can buy a motorbike or scooter. The COE only entitles U to "own" yr bike for a mere 10 yrs, after which if U decide to keep it for another 10 yrs U gotta buy that COE again. Current COE price for motorbikes is SGD6500/-. We are paying up to as much as SGD18000/- here for a small capacity (up to 200cc) bike or scooter. That means if I were residing in the US, I could probably buy nearly half a dozen scooters for the price of one here.....go figure folks :'(

I am using 110/70 14 IRC tyre on my front. Have been using it for 3+ years now. If U asked me, I couldn't feel any diff.in handling from the stock Cheng Shin tyre (90/80 14?? Can't remember wat size it was...). The handlebars always feels light & vague at any speeds. Gives little cornering confidence (especially on wet roads). I have given it less air in front (1.7 - 1.8 bar) hoping tat would improve cornering grip somewhat. ;)

Oh glad U like the F1 Night Race Big Blue. I used to love F1 of the 90s (Senna and Prost era). Those were the days where racing seemed more interesting, where the race cars were more "analogue" in nature. Where there were still manual shifts and clutches and stuffs. It all seemed more involving for the drivers and spectators.
Well, if any of U guys decide to pop by one of these days, do look me up. I'll give U a ride around town on my scooter!!

You folks are #3 in the GDP world rankings (per the IMF), behind only Qatar & Luxembourg....
Quite a accomplishment.
In any event I can't talk now, I'm buying a large boat and filling it with Toyotas & Kymcos.
Look for me Tuesday, next.
I'll be wearing a Red Sox hat and flowered surf shorts....we'll tie up next to Merlion.
Stig

HoHoHo, I'll be there...first in line!!! HaHa!! Yes, we have certainly come a long way for a tiny country. I've lived here all my life (48 years) but its getting pretty expensive of late, just to get by.... If U enjoy motoring, this isn't the place to live.... Cars & bikes are way overpriced! So is housing. Roads are congested almost every where, nearly every time (its a big city, the whole country is just a city...).There are speeding /traffic light/illegal parking cameras all over the place. Parking is usually a nightmare. Public transport is great but its too crowded during peak hours. We have no canyons to carve, no dirt/mountainous areas to go off-roading....its a concrete jungle out there. And did I mention the weather? Phew! Its always hot  & humid everyday, with plenty of rain. Well, I'm real glad I've got a scooter! Its the best way to get around over here, methinks.

I'm sorry...What country?
Stig

Make a guess Mr Stig. Its a tiny island at the southern most tip of the Malay peninsula. It has approx.5 million inhabitants now (and counting...). Wanna laugh somemore? Well, the cost of a small family car like, say, a Toyota Corolla 1600cc will set U back $125K (US$90K).

If I had to buy a scooter again, it would surely be another Super 8 125cc or its equivalent (no need F.I.,ABS,traction control, etc please, I use it mostly for commuting and abit of touring, don't really need all those....). Its great fun for city riding; light & easy handling right down to walking pace. Even pushing it around the carpark isn't much of a pain. I could lane-split all day long without much worries and I can maintain 100kmh on the highways too. Sure, the engine isn't "high-tech" or very entertaining but it gets the job done and done well without trouble.

FYI, buying a new scooter/bike in my country costs an arm and several legs.....(e.g. Super 8 125cc-now discontinued here-$9500 (US$7200/-), Kymco Xciting 400 $18,000 (US$13,600), Yamaha TMax530  $26,000 (US$19,600)  Go figure......

Super 8 150 / Re: Losing Accelleration at WOT
« on: May 06, 2015, 01:10:45 AM »
Howdee, I ride a Super 8 125cc, had it for about 6 yrs (mileage so far:38000km) from new. I live in a tropical climate where temperatures rarely dip below 27 degrees C'. I use it mainly to get to work and back (approx.20km round trip, plenty of stop-N-go traffic). Last weekend I took it for a longish (approx.160km) road trip with my wife on board and did lots of WOT at highway speeds (100kmh - 110kmh). I remembered filling up the petrol tank and topping it off some more and when I got back to doing WOT on the highway trying to maintain 110kmh, the scooter surged quite badly. It jerked whenever I tried to get up to 110kmh. But when I slowed down to 100kmh it was fine and it felt like it could cruise all day at 100kmh. I suspected a few things;like valve clearances or a defective ignition coil or cable or spark plug but haven't the time nor the skill to investigate further. Will be doing a long road trip next month with the wife (1200km)and some friends on their small scooters so am just hoping the problem goes away because I topped off the tank with petrol last time.

Anyways, its been mostly great reading all this from fellow S8 owners. Very educational n fun!

Hope Mr Wkreps U get your problem solved soonest! Cheers!

Super 8 150 / Re: Front cover fell off
« on: July 24, 2014, 08:43:21 AM »
A friend of mine had his whole exhaust end can fall off his scooter while riding a couple of years ago (SYM Fighter 150)!!! After I heard that, went out to check that the bolts on my Super 8 125 were tight. I have been checking them bolts every now and then.

Thanks Vivo and the rest of U guys for the advice. I have blocked the fat hose going into the top of the cam-cover and the thin one going into the intake manifold and the backfiring from the exhaust stopped. No more 'gunshots' heard, not even small farts. One question, will the sys. (exhaust muffler, etc) clog up over time with the air pump dismantle or will it possibly cause the engine to fail?
Thanks again!

Hi guys, I have removed the metal cap above the carb. and a spring popped out. Beneath it is a thin round rubbery shroud attached to a short plastic cylinder. Under this cylinder is a needle which fits into a small recessed hole (think it leads to the float bowl or somewhere...in the carb.body). The rubber shroud still looked OK. There were no holes in it. Sprayed silicon all over it and reinstalled it. Guess tat would keep it soft and tender I hope...  The additional air injection pump (a small black tennis ball-sized thing...) has 3 rubber hoses sprouting out of it. Two of the hoses are fat ones while one is skinny. One of the fat hoses is connected to the cam-cover, the other fat hose is open-ended (for fresh air intake?) and the skinny one...well I can't quite see where that one leads to but it appears to go in the direction of the carb,or block..... Ehh, which hose should I be plugging?  ??? The fresh air intake hose? Thank U
