Yes :)
Since fitting my 250cc engine I have a 160cc cylinder and piston for sale  ;)

But if you don't wany more CC's start by removing you air filter/box and fit a cone type filter (less than a tenner on ebay) and at the same time fit a bigger main jet. Standard is .92 going up to .95-.97 will be good. The standard exhaust is VERY restictive. I fitted a universal megaphone type, again cheap off ebay. Simple to do and no fancy tools/skills needed.
When you have done that get a larger front chain cog, go up two sizes from what you have.

If you do all that you will have move power throughout the whole rev range and should go over 70mph.

One last thing, I found the vacuum operated fuel tap (petcock) to be crap. It works well but I found that at full throttle there is not enougth vacuum to keep it fully open so once the fuel chamber in the carb was not filled the the correct level the revs dropped 2-3 K. I fitted a manual one  8)

Click here to download it :)

Please remember its only the engine thats simular, the rest of the bike is totally different.
If there is anything you need to know about the Pulsar let me know ;)

Vacuum operated fuel pump maybe (common in karting)

Are you sure its just not a vacuum operated petcock?

Fitted the 250cc today  ;D was a tight squeeze but went in with a few mods  :P

Well 1000KM's later its running really sweet  ;D BUT I saw a 250cc engine on ebay and couldn't resist it  ;)
I'll be fitting it this weekend. Double the power of the original engine at 14.7KW (20hp)
Should be a straight swap but I'll need to modify the engines top mount as the cylinder is approx 8-9mm taller.

OHC or OHV engine? (should be OHC being a 2011 bike)

Engine is more of less the same as a Honda XLR125.
Good engines, I fitted a 170cc kit to mine (called 170cc but nearer 160cc in reality) works quite well but I have just bought a 250cc engine to squeeze into it  8)
I have a workshop manual for the xlr200 (basically the same engine but bigger bore/stroke) if its any use to you?

What year is your Pulsar? there are two different engines depending on the year ;)

Well it is more or less finished  ;D

The 160cc cylinder gives alot more torque and coupled with the 17/39 gearing you can drive around at the same speed with lower RPM's.
Mine does a steady 80KPH at 6'000 rpm while it was nearer 8K before.
Jettting was (and still is) a nightmare, the 30mm carb (26mm slde) was a no-go no matter what jets were fitted but the original Kymco carb (26mm with 20mm slide) works VERY well using the original pilot jet #40 but the original main jet #92 was too small. I had no joy using Keihin jets (the proper ones for this carb) and ended up with a Mikuni 97.5 main jets and the needle on the 2nd lowest setting.
I now have a 27mm carb (22mm slide) that I am playing with right now which is more or less running quite well but I havn't really noticed any performance gain so I think I will refit the original carb and retain bettery economy.

Racing CDI wasn't as great as the ebay add claims (no suprise) but it does feel a little more "punchy" with it fitted.

Universal "megaphone" exhaust fitted, sounds fantastic but a little loud  :P

HID light conversion was outstanding!!!!!!!!!!! if you do nothing else do this  8) night driving is now a pleasure.

Top speed now is an indicated 115KPH (just over 70mph) before 100KPH (nearly 63mph) would be about it. This is on the flat and I'm a fat git too  ;)
I have touched 120KPH downhill, any faster and I think it would explode.

I think a higher compression piston in the future might help but for me it's too much work/expense for a small bit more power. After all the bike isn't really built for high speed and the couple of times I've done 120KPM it feels a bit dodgy.

I'm willing to bet a larger main jet will fix the problem

In which carb?

What jets are in the 26mm?

The original carb was 26mm with a 0.92 main and 0.40 idle jet.

I have a Pulsar 125 (engine is a clone of a Honda XLR125)
I have fitted a free flowing exhaust, cone filter, so called "RACE" CASOLI CDI along with a BBK (63.5mm piston=157cc)
The original carb was 26mm with a 0.92 main and 0.40 idle jet. I bought a 30mm carb thinging the bike would need something bigger.

With the 30mm carb it starts and idles OK but if you open it up too fast it nearly stalls. I was thinking too lean? The needle was on the 3rd notch so I moved it to the last one and it helps a bit but it really feels like its holding back. I took the 30mm carb off and had a look at the jets and checked the float level. The floats  wern't too bad but I was supprised to see it only had a 0.90 main jet and I can't read whats on the idle jet. I'm guessing it's far too weak?

As an experiment I refitted the original 26mm carb (never used with the BBK before) The needle again was in the middle notch so I moved it to the lowest.
The engine seemed much more responsive and doesn't bog down when opening it up fast yet it feels like it just hasn't got enougth flow for higher speed/RPM's.

My question is should I stick with the 26mm carb with a bigger main jet (it so what size to start with?) or try re-jetting the 30mm carb?

I have orderd two main jets (97.5 and 107.5) to play with.

Any help/suggestions welcomed :)

Here's a short vid of it running ;)

Been a little busy  ;D
So far I've now fitted a 30mm carb and port-matched the inlet to the carb. On order is a cone type air filter and I have a nice exhaust to go on too.
The main thing I've done is fit a 149cc barrel bored out top 63.5mm giving 158cc  8)
I've also orderd a 39 rear and 17 front chain cogs (original on my bike was 16/41)
Not really tested it yet as it has to run in but there is alot mote torque there!!!! when I fit the 17/39 cogs it should be nice.
Still waiting for the "racing" CDI to arrive (ebay cheapo thing from China)  as well as a Bi-Xenon headlight kit.

I don't seem to be having any luck finding an exhaust, is there such a thing as a universal type?

« on: July 29, 2012, 10:23:12 AM »
Anyone have any tips for squeezing a little more speed/power from a 125 Pulsar?
It will get to 'about' 110 kph at 10K RPM then it seems like the CDI cuts the revs down to 8K RPM.
I have orderd a 16 tooth front spocket (original is 15 teeth) and a so called 'racing CDI' that has a higher rev limit.
Has anyone here had any experience with aftermarket CDI boxes?

Also the engine, is it Kymco's own design or is it a clone of a Honda or something? and are there any big bore kits available?

I'm not looking for 160kph or anything like that, just a genuine 130kph would be OK.

A few years ago I had a 150cc chinese (unkown make) cross bike, I changed the carb to one a little bigger and it make a massive differance.
What size carb is fitted as standard to the Pulsar?

Any aftermarket exhausts?

And one last question :) there seems to be load of various vacumn pipes on my engine, I assume there is a vacumn operated fuel pump? and what is that pipe coming out of the head?
