General Discussion / Re: 70 years old and still rocking the MOD
« on: February 25, 2013, 04:41:27 AM »
Cool story.  I bought my first bike at age 74.  At 75 I got a Piaggio MP3 500 and rode it from Dallas to NC, stopping in TN to ride the tail of the Dragon -- 2,431 miles total on return.  I decided to sell it after riding to New Orleans from Dallas at 77, doing the 531 miles in one day in July but I had to get the Kymco 500 this year after my Honda PCX was stolen.  I needed more power.  I'll probably go back to ride the Dragon again this year.  I don't turn 80 until August.  Of course I'm licensed.  I took the course at a Harley dealer.

Xciting 500 / Throttlemeister for 2010 Xciting 500
« on: December 09, 2012, 10:18:03 PM »
I had a Throttlemeister on my old bike and used it a lot on long trips.  I'd like to put one on my 2010 Xciting 500Ri but I do not know what model of Throttlemeister fits my current bike.  Has anyone installed the Throttlemeister on their bike?  If so, what model did you buy?  If you don't know that, what is the size of the handlebar?  I'd need to start with that.  Is it a 1" or smaller?  Thanks for any info.

Xciting 500 / Re: Valve adjustment

I'm curious.  At what mileage are you doing the valve adjustment?  Did the bike start dying on you or are you doing it as a preventive maintenance?

I have the full sized Givi windshield.  It's the first time I've had a windshield on a bike that I didn't look over.  I might cut it down but I'm enjoying the full screen with the cooler weather.  I applied RainCoat today.  I think RainCoat is a necessity with a windshield you look through.

I am enjoying the Givi shield more than I thought I would.  I tried taking it up to speed but only touched 70.  It seemed to move a bit there but I'll try it out again over the holidays.  I am not planning to cut it down before spring.  It did make me wish I had more wind flow protection for the legs.

I bought the Givi also and installed it yesterday.  It is big, the first windshield I've had that I have to look through.  But it is cold now and it certainly protects the upper body so I am going to try it a while before deciding whether to cut it down or not.  Tomorrow I'll take it out on the freeway and try it at higher speeds.

We get to ride pretty close to every day in Texas and I'm staying for this winter so will get to ride a bunch of cold days.

Thought I had a better deal but it did not check out.  It said fuel injectors but only had carburetor.

I need to replace my brake pads on a 2010 Xciting 500Ri but I'm not sure which are best.  I found an article about replacement at http://stores.ebay.com/International-Bike-Disc-Brake-Pads/About-Compounds.html that has good info but I'm not technical enough to interpret it for the Kymco.  What do you guys think?

Xciting 500 / Re: Squealing brake problem
« on: October 14, 2012, 07:49:57 PM »
Thanks for the info.  The bike is still in warranty (a new but 2010 model) so I guess I should let the dealer change the pads, if necessary, but I read the instructions.  How difficult is it to change the pads?  It didn't look like a difficult situation but I've never done it.

Xciting 500 / Squealing brake problem
« on: October 14, 2012, 03:04:55 AM »
My front brakes are squealing when I just sit on the bike and roll it forward.  It started, I talked to the dealer and he said it would be OK to put brake cleaner on a rag and clean the front disks.  I did that and it stopped for a while but then started again.  I've tried reading up on what it can be.  Some people recommend Disc Brake Quiet so I bought some to take with me when I go to the dealer.  Has anyone else had the problem?  Used this product?  What were your results?

The product was described on another forum as " plastisol stuff that is spread on the back of the pads and allowed to dry about half an hour. It prevents metal-to-metal contact that sets up high speed vibrations that cause squeal. It is usually supplied in little packets with brake shoes."  Also, "This stuff also allows the pads to be pulled back from the disk because it causes the pad to stick with the retracting part of the brake."

I'll give it a try.  I know it will take some technique I haven't learned yet.  The bike is 485 lbs dry and I am 145 wet.  Technique is required.

I was serious about being "legit."  I don't want to do anything wrong on the board.  I just thought some people might be interested in the link.  A lot of Kymco models are listed there.  The manuals may not be the latest but free works for most people these days.  Goggle brought up a lot of sites that said "get a free download" but when you get there it isn't free.  You have to "register," install special software on your computer, etc.  I consider all that dangerous.  This place just downloaded the file.

What qualifies as "legit" in this case?  I found it starting off with sites listed on this forum that eventually led me to that link.  When uncompressed it is 21 pdf files, each a chapter.  For example, "chapter 8. CYLINDER HEAD/VALVES."  The chapter is 38 pages.

The whole book is entitled "XCITING 500/250."
