I wrote a post a few weeks back titled Chasing your Dreams: The Naperville Scooter Store.
The post was written hoping to inspire others to dream big and pursue those dreams. I also wanted to share my own vision for a scooter store in my beautiful hometown of Naperville, Illinois. The time is right and Naperville is a perfect place for a scooter dealership.
In the last several weeks, I have charged ahead. Life is more fun when you have passion, and I have had a hard time containing my excitement. I am happy to say I am progressing faster than I had hoped...
My dream is becoming a reality.
I have been looking at several locations for my business, and am closing in on what I want, what I need, and realistically, what I can afford.
I hope to have my dealership open within 6 months. This may be optimistic, but it is certainly attainable.
I am currently looking at spaces, and will catch you up briefly on my search:

This was the first location I looked at. It is an eyesore in the center of Downtown Naperville. A perfect location, however the building would most likely need knocked down. I liked it for it's location, as well as my vision of beautifing the downtown. This location has been ruled out for several reasons, most importantly the price of purchase (currently asking $950,000 as a short sale), as well as the cost of improvements...

This was the next location that caught my eye. A great location on Naperville's northwestern edge, it has easy access to highways and is very visible, the building was most recently a restaurant. I have put this location on the back burner (pun?) because of it's size, and the fact that it isn't yet on the market either for rent or purchase.

When I found this location, I was blown away. The building is beautiful, with windows floor to ceiling. It's interior is open and clean. It is ready to go right now, and has great parking. It was perfect for my vision. However, the space is 6800 square feet (although divisible), and they want $23.50 per square foot. It is bigger than I need, so I would need to negotiate for part of the space. Finally, after sitting empty for two years, the space has recently come under contract for rent. Perhaps I will revisit this space for my next location, when sales dictate expansion...

I stopped by this space today. Much smaller than the previous two locations, this spot is located on Jefferson and Washington in Naperville's Downtown. It is another perfect location. The spot has many advantages. Other than it's downtown location, North Central College is just steps away, and the smaller space would certainly be easier on my budget. There is even a free parking lot adjacent to the building. My own parking lot would be wonderful, but why pay for it if you don't have to?
I have a call in to the leasing agent inquiring about the availabilty, expenses, and size of final property. I hope to get in for a look in the next few days. My biggest concern is whether or not the space is big enough for me or my distributors to consider...
Again, I am open to a variety of locations, but the research I have done so has taught me a lot. I will continue my research on properties, and am confident the perfect spot is out there...

What would Naperville Scooter be without scooters to sell?
I have been in touch with several different scooter distributors, and as of now, my two leading candidates for suppliers are Genuine Scooter and Bintelli Scooter.
Genuine is based out of Chicago, which is certainly a plus. Their product is great, and depending on model, offer either a one or two year warranty. They are currently looking to expand, however they do have two dealerships in the area, Arlington Motorsports (30 miles north) and, Scooter Works Chicago (35 miles east). I don't want to step on anyone's toes, although I have no fear of competition.
Bintelli Scooter is even more interesting to me. They offer 6 different models, and their scooters have a two year warranty. They reached out to me, and I appreciate that. I have started promoting them and their bikes on various social media networks, and am evaluating the feedback I receive. Almost everything I hear or read has been positive. As a newer company, they may be more open to supplying a new dealer, such as Naperville Scooter, then many of the bigger brands. Their business philosophy is similar to mine, with a customer first attitude. Finally, they have no dealerships in Illinois, and I hope to be the first.
I also am moving ahead on other issues as well.
I plan on buying or renting a truck and offer free delivery. I would advertise Naperville Scooter on one side, and Ken Tracy Real Estate on the other...
I would like to offer free helmets or top cases with every purchase. Again, another spot to place my marketing...
I am developing a website, and have created pages on both Facebook and Twitter.
I have looked into a dealership license, which will cost about $1000 and requires two days of classtime.
With over 15 years in the financial services industry, I certainly have been crunching numbers. I would like a full years of expenses up front, and understand my distributor would have certain expectations as well.
I am aware of the many challenges I face. I have run a small business for the last 8 years (I am a Naperville Realtor), so I know it is not easy. Great things rarely are.
My biggest hurdle is probably putting together the necessary start up money. A challenge, perhaps, but what would life be without challenges?
A bad economy? Cold winters in Illinois? Insurance? I look at those as speed bumps, not serious obstacles...
Who knows? If we have a real bad winter, we can always sell snowmobiles:)
Chase your dreams.
Ken

I was riding my Kymco Agility 125 yesterday on my way to the health club.  The weather was cool and overcast, fairly typical for early November...

As I was cruising down the road, a big smile spread across my face.  This happens a lot.  Riding a scooter makes me happy.  It really does.  I probably look like a crazy man to those driving in the other direction, but I smile nevertheless...

Feeling on top of the world, an interesting thought crossed my mind.  I started comparing the joy I was experiencing with the pleasure one has driving a high end sports car.

I thought about how my bike stacks up to the beautiful Mercedes SL500.

At first glance, one might think, "How can you compare these two?  They are apples and oranges..."

One is a two wheeled scooter made in Taiwan, the other a high end German automobile.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized how the two had more in common then most would guess...

So I broke my comparison into 7 categories: Power, Handling, Fun, Function, Price, Costs to maintain, and finally Wow Factor/Looks...

Kymco Agility 125 vs. Mercedes SL 500

      Vs.

Power
The Kymco Agility 125 is powered by a 125 cc engine, which generates 9.3 horsepower.
The Mercedes SL500 has a V8, which generates 429 horsepower.
Big win for the Mercedes.

Handling
The Kymco is a 2 wheeled bike weighing 232 pounds.  It darts around town with ease.
The Mercedes is a beast weighing just under 2 tons (3950 pounds).  With its surprisingly soft suspension, the car handles more like a luxury car than a sports car.  If you are not careful, you can find yourself in a ditch if you make many aggressive manuevers.
Kymco wins for handling.

Fun
Both are lots of fun.  Driving with the wind in your hair (OK, I am bald) is a pleasure owners of both can enjoy.
However, I smile like a crazed fool when riding my scooter.  I have never had the same feelings when driving anything with four wheels.
Advantage again goes to the Kymco, probably coming as a surprise to many..

Function
Both the scooter and the car are two seaters.  Neither is suitable for driving with small children or car seats.
Both also have limited storage.  The scooter has a trunk under the seat, while the Mercedes has a small trunk in the rear.
Riding a scooter, the driver is vulnerable to the elements.
The Mercedes, however, comes with both a soft top and a removable hard top.  This makes it good for rainy or cold days.  It also has air conditioning for driving in the summer heat.
Finally, the Mercedes has fantastic traction control, making it drivable through the winter.  I would not drive my scooter in the snow.
The advantage here goes to the car.

Price
The MSRP on the Agility is $1,899.
The Mercedes retails for $105,500.
Enough said.

Cost to operate/maintain
Maintaing a scooter is cheap and easy.  I filled up the tank today, and it cost me $3.88.
Basic maintenance like oil changes and headlight replacement can be done quite easily on the Kymco, even with little or no mechanical expertise.
The Mercedes, however, is a different animal, and the costs are exponentially higher.  I would never consider doing any work on the Mercedes.  Many complex parts and technology.  Any repairs should be left to professionals.
Finally, the cost of a new set of tires on the SL 500 is about the price of a new scooter.
A big win for the Agility 125.

Wow factor/Looks
This is a close category.
They both look great in red, and both draw plenty of attention.
One can certainly argue that the car is better looking, but I downgrade the Mercedes slightly for the "What is this guy trying to prove?" look you receive when you are driving a car that costs as much as a small home.
I rate this category a draw.

Bottom line, both of these vehicles are fun to drive, and both get a lot of looks.  I have owned both, and honestly, I enjoy my Kymco more than I did the Mercedes.

So if you are looking for a fun, econonomical, environmentally friendly vehicle that is suprisingly functional, buy a scooter.

If you must experience German automobile engineer, I understand.  I like German cars too.  However, I recommend you still buy that scooter, and with the $100,000 you save, go pick yourself up an Audi A6.

They look great in red too, have a big trunk, and will still leave you with $50,000 to play with.

Hi 0807.  Thanks for sticking up for me.  Weird how some want to be so bitter.  How have my posts offended anyone?  Certainly, I am getting great info from various forums.  I have searched google, and find some.  And I have.  However, the info I get on this forum, and the relationships I am developing are priceless...
Thanks again!

Hi Vivo.  I certainly have heard this too, yet no personal experience...
I have heard the factory makes a big difference, however, and believe Bintellis are made at the best factory in China...
I also hear good things on the finish...
I may buy one to test.

Perhaps a powder blue Vibe like this one:

Fairly close to my Agility in terms of size, but the color and the retro look would make it fun.
Also, since the size is similar, it would be a close comparison.  I could judge the public response, and see how it holds up to a bit of rough handling...
If it falls apart, which I doubt, the MSRP is only $1599, so it would be cheaper than starting Naperville Scooter as a Bintelli dealership, and then regretting it (again, I doubt it).
Thanks again!

Hi 0807.  I am glad you are a worrier, yet not a downer.  You find solutions to your concerns, and I appreciate that!
I don't worry about anything.  It is funny when people bring up the problems with opening a scooter store (or anything else for that matter).  I can list a million problems.  Special people find opportunities, and you seem to...
You mentioned you were following on FB.  What is your real name?
Thanks again for everything!

Hi Karl, Richard, and 08.  Thanks!  I love when I hear any of my writing inspires...
It makes me feel great!
I laughed out loud about the bulldozer comment.  It is horrible, and my office is about 200 yards from it...
Would love to do that property, but not limiting my business to it...
Would be cheaper/easier to start with renting a space, and am keeping my options open, and not ruling out anything.  I want to have my scooter shop, and look forward to posting more...
FYI, Bintelli Scooters is my current pick to sell.  I have been researching, and love what I hear...
Thanks again guys!

Hi Alex, Randy, and Zimmerman.  Thanks!
I was originally skeptical of the Bintelli, but they did contact me via FB, which I appreciated...
The more I read, the more I like.  I hope they add a bigger one, but in the meantime I am sold on Bintelli.  I figure as a new distributor, they might give my startup a second look, where Vespa may not...
Also, I like their customer/dealership first philosophy and the two year warranty...
I may buy one soon to see how I like it!  Slightly feel I am racing against time, because they have no Chicago area dealers, and I would LOVE to be the first...
Thanks again guys for the great feedback!

?  Am I jerking your chain?  Strange comment.  Is there a problem with posting on multiple forums?  Different perspectives...
Perhaps you should get a life.
Thanks for stopping in!

General Discussion / Bintelli Scooters?
« on: November 05, 2012, 01:28:06 AM »
Hello all. Perhaps you are aware, I am aggressively pursuing my own dealership in or around Naperville, Illinois. I have posted about this, and will repost links at the bottom of this for those looking to catch up...
I recently was contacted by a company out of Florida name Bintelli Scooters. Has anyone heard of them?
I assume they are typical Chinese bikes, distributed out of a Florida based company.
I have read plenty about the low quality of Chinese bikes, but that alone won't rule it out for me or my dealership.
I would love to sell Genuines, Vespas, Kymcos, or Aprilias, and continue to look into those. Honestly, those generally look for more seasoned dealerships with very deep pockets...
I am still in the planning stages, and realize there are many challenges that lay ahead, so we don't need to rehash those...
But I am interested in all posibilities. So any info/thoughts on Bintelli would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Ken

Hi Vivo and 08087.  Thanks!
I am pursuing the project.  Worst case, nothing.
Mid level case, I sell the building (I am a real estate agent)
Best case, I put together some partners, buy the building, and beautify Naperville.
Thanks again!
