HURRAY!!!

I was able to ride to my dealer today and the new exhaust is on my Like now!  I forgot just how quit it is.

When I went to leave, I heard some rattling that sounded like it was coming from the motor/exhaust area.  So I bent down and found it to be my center stand.  It appears as though one of the bolts has fallen out and only one bolt was holding it on!  Luckily, I keep tools in my Like and was able to remove the center stand and ride home.  Now I need to find a matching bolt and put the center stand back on.

Good news! I wish I was as fortunate. Early this week my dealer called that my warranty parts were on its way. Today they informed Kymco has yet to ship. 😡  So here I am looking at a sunny weekend around 70 degrees a no scooter to ride. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am with Kymco's customer service.

I understand.  The second time I took my Like in was for it stumbling, running rough, and the check engine light coming on.  It took them 5 days to reset the check engine light and call me telling me it's fixed.  I picked it up and just 2 miles from the dealership it starts to hesitate and the check engine light comes back on.  So the next day I took it back to the dealer.  After one week, they determined that the throttle position sensor is bad.  3 weeks later Kymco didn't know if they were going to replace just the sensor (for which there is no part number for) or replace the computer and throttle body.  After I started calling and showing up at the dealership every day did they finally decide to replace the throttle body and computer.  2 days later they called to tell me it was ready for me to pick it up.  So yes, I do understand.

I wasn't able to get the new exhaust installed yesterday as I had to go out of town at the last minute.  Since my local dealership is closed on Sunday and Monday, I have to wait till Tuesday to get it replaced.

It was a balmy 67 degrees here today.  It was REALLY bad because this thing kept blinding me.  That big thing in the sky, I think people call it the sun.  :D

I changed tactics this week and kept to the back roads and have not opened up the throttle to full all week, as a result I managed to get 124 miles out of a tank.

It goes in for it's first service soon and I am getting them to change the oil to a synthetic.

I waited till my Like had 1000 miles on it before changing to synthetic.  If you change over to synthetic too early then the rings won't have time to get fully seated and worn in so you'd up up with a motor that burns a little oil.

Ouch! A small crack, rust plus heat and vibration can do that. Good thing that you can claim still claim warranty for it.

The crazy part is that my Like has no rust!

It is kept in a garage that never gets below freezing, I never ride in the rain if I can help it, and Texas does not salt the roads.

Was this due to poor welding?

No.  You can see in the pictures that it did not break on any of the welds.  It looks like it started to crack on the backside of the front muffler mount.  Most likely it started to crack when it was very hot from extended full throttle riding on rough roads.  Once it was cracked and formed an exhaust leak, the exhaust leak increased the temp of the metal around the crack which allowed the crack to spread.  This is what I am thinking caused it anyway.  I am not 100% sure though.

So, with this new eBay "sport free-flow LIKE200i exhaust" - did you get any more RPM's or HP's, or at least some more MPG's?
Put some pants on it, Andy ~! - that's quite a sight!
Hang in there '91 -!

I actually did notice an increase in power.  It was not a huge increase that I could feel, accept for off the line power seems to have increased.  There is a small straight close to my house that I have to go very slow going into it, and there is a round-a-bout at the end of it.  Typically, I can hit about 32-33 mph before having to jam on the brakes for the round-a-bout.  Today, I hit about 37-38 mph before having to jam on the brakes.  Top speed has only slightly increased.  So, it appears as though the mid range power has increased with a small increase in top end power.  I might go this weekend and install some heavier rollers to see if I can get a bit more speed out of my Like with an open exhaust just to see how it responds.

Ohh, it went from a small crack to falling off all within 300 miles of riding.

I went to the dealer today because the crack got MUCH worse, and the exhaust was rattling REALLY bad.  It sounded like I was dragging a bunch of tin cans behind me.  So they pull up the tracking on my new muffler and find out it is stuck in Minnesota, or Michigan because of all the winter weather they've had up there.  It is currently in UPS's hands.  So once things clear up, it can be shipped down here and I'll have it within 3 days.

The big problem though is that the muffler developed more cracks and was VERY loose, even though all of the bolts were tight.  So, the service guy says he can either take the muffler off, or I can keep riding it and WHEN it falls off, recover it and bring it in.  However, knowing my luck, a big truck would be behind me and would run over the muffler thus destroying it in the process which could put my warranty claim in jeopardy.  So, I had them remove the muffler.  The tech took the back lower bolt out, and the muffler just fell off!!!!  Here is how it looks now...........

Needless to say, I am NOT riding it early in the morning or late at night as I would wake up every neighbor I've got!  I also had to go buy some ear plugs because it is so loud that it hurt my ears badly, just riding it 1/2 a mile to the closest sporting goods store.  So it looks like I'll be driving my truck for the next few days.  :(

Thanks for your reply 91-
So, do others have this vacuum in the tank after riding?
I will try bringing the fuel tank cap in and warming and drying any moisture out of it. If it is supposed to vent - it ain't doing so.
I do not think there would be any fumes to speak of - take a look at that vent opening - looks to be about 1/16th of an inch.
When the days warm up a bit I will try breaking the seal on the gas cap and running the scoot on the center stand - which would be equal to cutting the vent tube. See what happens.

I've never experienced what you describe on my Like.  On cars I have, but never on my Like.

When it comes to the emmissions equipment, I would NOT recomend cutting ANY hose.

On carbed engines, there is low pressure fuel running to the carb, and most of the time the fuel pump is not a very good one and it has to suck the fuel down the fuel hose to the fuel pump.  If there is any kind of vacuum in the fuel tank, it could cause problems.

However, our Like 200i is not carbbed.  It is fuel injected, and the fuel pump is submerged in the fuel.  On top of that, it is a high pressure electric fuel pump.  There would have to be a MASSIVE amount of vacuum in the fuel tank to cause problems.

Also, if you were to cut that hose, then every time you park your scooter you will have fuel fumes coming from it.  Do you park it in a garage?  It would smell like you have an open container of fuel in your garage.  That is not safe at all.

I'm typically all about modifying a scooter for better performance, but this is an area that even I leave alone!  :D

Well, the crack has gotten a lot larger.  Fiberglass packing inside of the muffler is now coming out of the crack, and so the exhaust is now a LOT louder, but mostly it is deeper.  To me it sounds GREAT!!   This solidifies my decision to get a pipe on my Like!!

Also, I was able to hit 68 mph today with a very strong tail wind!  Maybe the exhaust leak has given a little bit of a power increase.

"Now that is a crack!!!" is what the service guy said when he looked at the muffler on my Like this morning.  He told me it is probably going to take about 2 weeks to get a new one in.  In the mean time, he said I can keep riding it, so I intend to since we are having some great riding weather!
