General Discussion / instrumentation

I like how legible is the simple dash on my LIBERTY 150i.
It is well lit and the color is pleasing to my eyes on my night rides.

Key on, it displays the basics, then settles into a clear and useful instrument.
[
Big enough - easy to read.

I always enjoyed my Honda Forza's 'key-on' antics!

and while I haven't been in a multitude of automobiles, I've never found a more thoughtfully placed or easier to use set of gauges than those in the late Scion xB's. Built by Toyota, modestly priced, customizable, Toyota hoped to interest younger buyers.
I've never seen a more legible set of gauges - even in the brightest sunlight. Push buttons can scroll through average speed, MPG's, fuel range, etc, etc. The placement puzzled me - but I saw their reasoning after driving the car. Brilliant - like a fighter pilot would expect. Line of sight. Not down in your fists.

that's all i got

Roadcraft / hearing protection

To protect my hearing on every scooter ride I wear these 3M foam ear-plugs.

I buy them by the carton - most economical I've found.

They let me hear just enough - and not too little.

Even while wearing a full-face helmet I find that I want to wear these plugs.

How on earth did you deduce from the OP that this was a Honda Stig?  Are you psychic or was it some sort of Holmesian deductive reasoning?
beginning with the principle that once you have eliminated the impossible, “whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth”

Honda Supercub 5500 miles
Oh man, that's a great looking bike!
Sorry to hear you got dinged.

Can we get a photo - to see extent of damage.
We've got 2 nearby Honda Power Sellers - I could ask them.

People take either Pirelli Angels or Michelin City Grip II, best deal for grip, endurance and money.

I have one of those on each end!

wait!
No I don't.
2 different scooters.

being a touch superstitious - I like the idea of Angels under me!
Plus the tire is Italian and my Piaggio is Italian.
(no wait! - the Angels are from Yugoslavia, and the scoot is from Vietnam.
OK, never mind)

While Stig is a big guy who wants a smaller bike, I'm a little guy who dreams of a big bike! Maybe...someday...but like Stig, it would have to be red.

Or maybe a sweet German 6 cylinder?

But Hawk...!
Your days of DIY servicing would come to an end with one of these monsters!
Of course, other than an oil change every 15K - they probably need nothing doing for 100K miles!
Well, you could have fun waxing the thing for 2 days.

Hey - we all have dreams.
Me, I was showing Mike how to hang kitchen cabinets last night.
And I don't even know a Mike....

I was hit by a car recently, and now the front wheel is out of alignment. I can't tell where the damage is. Anyone know how much this would cost to diagnose/fix? The bike is worth about $3000 when in good condition.
It's a Honda?
Which model?

box or random hardware or was each item listed?
Not listed.
But once you've changed a belt, rollers and air-filter, checked the valves, removed the exhaust and both wheels - the box of bits are pretty recognizable :)

General Discussion / Re: DTX 360 rear shock absorbers

Welcome to the forum Foorneri!

I have not owned enough scooters to disprove a comment which I read years ago, made by a fellow who builds and races scooters. This was the era where the engine, transmission and rear wheel were connected as a unit, and there was very little room for suspension travel.
He offered: "No scooter is ever going to ride as well as a motorcycle."

He said that there were two schools of thought after buying and fitting expensive rear shocks:

1) "I feel no significant difference!"

2) ".....after this effort and expense - Of course this is a better ride!"

I think one would have to have two scooters to test for any real improvements in the marginal ride most scooters give.

just my 2 centimes

General Discussion / LIKE200i bits from eBay
« on: March 27, 2025, 05:34:48 PM »
Years ago I bought several pounds of the same, for my LIKE200i.
Have used many parts from that lot several times over the past 12 years, especially when doing a CVT service or wheel removal and panel removals.

The nasty ones are from my LIKE200i - replaced by nearly new parts from the eBay crashed bike.
Didn't pay much for this.

General Discussion / NSR: March 29th, Vietnam War Veteran's Day
« on: March 27, 2025, 03:50:14 PM »
Seems that 3 presidents are involved in declaring a connection between March 29 and Vietnam veterans.
Nixon, Obama and Trump, each signed something to that effect during their terms of office.

March 29, 1973, is the date the last American combat troops departed Vietnam.
Now, March 29th is Vietnam War Veteran's Day.

The youngest KIA was a 15 yr old Marine.
12 were 17.
5 were 16.
61% were younger than 21.
11,465 were younger than 20.
31 brothers were KIA
Approx 100,000 were severely or 100% disabled.
1,448 soldiers were killed on the last day of their scheduled tour.
One high school in PA lost 54 former students.
18 yr olds comprised the largest age group to serve in Vietnam.
17,539 left widows at home.
Reportedly, the youngest commissioned infantry officer in-country was an 18 yr old 2nd Lt.
2/3rds in Vietnam, enlisted. (not drafted) (and approx. the same as WWII)
70% of the KIA's were enlisted.
The average age of a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam was 20 years old.

Youngsters.

Karl, great story!
I never knew how much interference I might be getting for my Transoceanic from nearby "Tropo hill".
I think I recall that these big screens were for "listening to the enemy". But, really, I have no idea....

The dumb things were targets for the badguy 122mm rockets. These explosive rockets would fall wherever - since they could be aimed & fired by leaning them on a fence or the side of a shed in the village. Point being - they lit 'em and often the airbase would pick 'em up with their radar then blow the siren that they were airborne......falling wherever!

So, I had the airbase's radar hill to contend with, as well.

"Artillery Hill", nearby - didn't cause listening problems - but it sure did scare the beans out of me the first time I experienced their nightly "H & I" fire over us. (randomly fired into no-go zones, to harass and interdict VC movements)
"Relax kid, that's 'out-going'!"
'Yeah, but my cot moved!'

General Discussion / "If I were to buy a new motorcycle" your choice?
« on: March 25, 2025, 03:12:07 PM »
Me, Honda 300F naked, and it'd have to be a new dealer left-over,
because if it's not this Honda red it wouldn't happen!

Had a bit of a windfall of $ recently after a SS ruling was changed for govt. pensioners.
Ahh...if only I weren't 6'3" - the wheelbase on this thing is too short.

YOU?

Welcome to the forum Toni!

Your 16 yr old scooter has a lot of miles on it!

To be clear....
Your issue is that it idles way too high after it is started?
Starts OK, just that the engine races.
Do you have any history with it?
Ran OK, for previous owner, or no?
Or had been sitting unused for a period of time??

We've got some pretty clever 'carb' guys here - they should be along soon to help you.
