Xciting 500 / Re: Kyurakyn Grips - You got 'em?
« on: August 12, 2009, 11:18:07 AM »
I have switched to a thinner, ProGrips, gel grip.  I find the opposite problem, i.e., that I need a thinner or skinnier grip as I have small hands.  The fatter the grip, the more it tends to hold my hand in the open position and put pressure on a nerve right in the saddle between my right thumb and index finger.  But, a thinner grip actually allows me to close my hand more and puts less pressure on that numbing area.  At least this is what works for me.

OK...it's technique!  Figured out what I was doing wrong, so here's my advice to all Xciting 500 newbies:
1. You can NOT raise this beast on ONE stand leg!  Both legs of the stand have to be flat on the deck.
2. You have to lean the bike further away from you than is comfortable at first (I was WAY afraid of dropping it).
3. So, with side stand down (at least until you get practiced), push the center stand down with your right foot until the left center stand leg touches the deck.
4. Hold passenger side rail with right hand.
5. Slowly, while holding the center stand down with your right foot, push bike away from you until you feel the other (the right) center stand leg touch the deck...both center stand legs are now planted and flat.
6. Now, push on the center stand pedal with your right foot while lifting on the side rail...
it pops right up on the center stand.

It's pure, brilliant physics!  Very cool.

Thanks to all who responded...but this case is NOW closed!!javascript:void(0);

Just wondering if there's anybody in the DC Metro area on this forum and who would like to consider planning and taking some local/regional rides?  I have family down in Staunton, VA and there would appear to be some wonderful rides that way, or toward the Eastern Shore, or up towards Frederick, Hagerstown and W.VA.  If anybody's interested, get back to me via the forum and maybe we can make contact offline and get some folks together.  Thanks.

That's all around GREAT advice...especially the "Let's get out and ride!!" part.  Been raining almost all week here in Maryland, but it's supposed to be gorgeous weekend!  Everyone have a great and a SAFE weekend!

Thanks for your reply about greasing the stand.  I plan to do so this weekend...by spray can, do you mean something like WD40?  Thanks.

Thx, first, for letting me know I'm not a big loser!  I've never had problems before but I've also never had a bike this heavy...and your description of the thoughts that run through your mind as you try to judo the thing into place was priceless!  I have actually thought that an extension of the push pad piece might let me get more leverage on it as I have to get up close and personal now and can only put one small area of pressure on the push pad with my foot.  And, I've nearly slipped off a couple of times!  (That could leave a mark!)

Anyway, thanks for the commiseration and the advice.

Yep, that's how I did it on my previous 250's...no problem.  Bought this bike from a soldier who needed the money and the stand has always been a problem...it also does not come all the way up once you push down...will actually drag on the ground if you forget to manually lift it back up.  Oh, well...I'll keep mucking around with it...isn't that one of the reasons we buy these bikes anyway??  Thanks for your reply.

Now that I have your attention...newbie here, had my '07 about a month now.  Don't want to appear woosy here, but I am having the dickens of a time trying to get this behemoth up on the center stand...have only gotten it up there a couple of times, and thought I was going to drop it then.  Is there a knack, a method, or do I just need to man up and do a few more reps at the gym?  Thanks to anyone who can help!
