People 50 / Re: Front tire?
« on: August 12, 2014, 06:05:25 PM »
I wouldn't waste my time with it.. The tires are light, and the rims are usually very close to begin with.. I balance all of mine simply because I have a balancer sitting right there, and it takes me less than a minute to check it. My guess is that your's is going to be less than a half oz. out, and since you're not travelling at speeds higher than 45mph why worry?

Ride and enjoy..

Excellent!! Now to find time to tear it apart and get the part out.. Chucking it and turning it, and slapping on a nice finish is the easy part. :)

I blew up  the photo on my screen and measured the screen.. The body of both seems to be the same, and the step is ovesized.. That means I can just turn off the step.. :)

I love projects like this..

I'd hold off on the CDI for now. Before you order the boss I'd go into the CVT and find out what's in there. Just to be sure.

One on left is what you want. Right is restricted.

Can anyone tell me the OD of both parts?? What I'm wondering is if the stepped one has the same OD as the unrestricted one on the left? Is the step the cause for the restriction?

I can easily chuck the restricted one up in my lathe and turn the step off, but I need to know if the OD of the one on the left is the size of the step or the rest of the part??

Human flesh makes a crappy brake pad.

That may be true, but I get mad everytime I hear someone say that Gasoline and Alcohol don't mix..  >:(

They do mix, but they taste TERRIBLE!!

Not sure where you're located, but I think this would do you.. Pull out your old one and measure it and compare..

Thanks Amac. I've seen Adventure Rider quoted a couple times here and that is what brought this topic up. I'll definitely check them out.

Just remember, there's nice sections of ADV and then there's the rest..  I've been on there for over 10 years and it's one of the only forums that I have numerous people on ignore.. I just recommend you don't visit the Basement.. 15% of the people in there are there to argue, and nothing else.. Internet tough guys..

The scooters and the regional sections are very nice, with tons of info and people who will go out of their way to help someone in need.

Just remember to tread lightly.. I've met lifelong friends (people I get together with several times a year) and I've met a couple people that I wouldn't stop and pee on if they were on fire.

I've never understood the desire to be an ass 24 hours a day, or strive to piss people off.. I'm on forums to learn and share, and have good hearted fun.. I guess I'm just a simpleton..

When I ordered a bunch of parts from Sloan's out of Murfreesboro, TN last winter, I got every part I ordered, both quickly and completely.. That included a seat for a 05' People 50 which I don't think is a standard stock item. :)

My only complaint was that I requested a tracking number but never got one. Instead, I got the parts I ordered in less than 10 days.

Love the saddlebags. Looks like at one time it could have carried a reel to reel projector.

Ha Ha!! They do have that look!! Now that I look at them I'm almost expecting to open them and see a movie projector from Grade School!! They're original for the time, but the R80 didn't come with them standard.. The handlebars are not original either, as the factory bars were taller and more swept back. I originally thought they were R90S bars, but I've compared them to others and I don't know what they are.

I actually hunted for that bike for 10 years I've had it for 6 since finding it in Kentucky. I had a 1982 R100RT and a 1986 R65 and sold both in an effort to find a plain jane R80 and have nothing but bags. I bet I bid on 2 dozen over the years on eBay, all going for a bit more than I'd give. This one was also a bid on eBay and the owner actually wanted $1000 more than my bid, but the Boss (his wife) told him he had to sell the BMW or the Harley, so he gave it to me at my bid price.  The factory seats on these are as comfortable as sitting on a rock, so I found the Corbin Touring seat over by Milwaukee. Other than standard maintenance, the only thing I've had to do was rebuild the carbs a couple years ago.. Parts are still fully available from Bing and I rebuilt them both in a couple hours with no parts left over!!! ;D

wkreps,
Since I know you're local, I thought I'd toss this out there for you and anyone else who might be interested..

http://wmgr.org/ Is the Wisconsin Moto Guzzi Riders Rally. They don't' care what you ride to the rally, with the mix of normally 300 folks being usually 1/3 Guzzi, 1/3 BMW, and 1/3 everything else.. I've ridden my Honda Helix, KLR, and various other bikes over there, including both of my Goldwings!! Great party!! They feed you pretty much all weekend, and if you're a microbrew lover, it's a must not miss!!! They have a couple standard beers going all the time and then they have 4 tappers that have microbrews rotated all weekend!!
And beer is included in the rally fee!!  I can't afford to stay home!!

And even though beer is free, the crowd isn't rowdy, but instead just a bunch of folks who enjoy beers, bikes, and BSing about both!! :) Great riding in the area, too!! Many of us jump on the bikes Saturday morning and go have breakfast in Platteville, and then wander the Mississippi before heading back later in the afternoon for dinner, beer, campfires, and laughter!!

I've been going to this rally for over 10 years and I won't miss it..

And enough hijacking.. Back to getting picked on for riding a scooter.. (speaking of that, a buddy of mine rides his Honda scooter down to this rally from Minnesota). This is a photo of both of our scooters at the Minnesota BMW Rally last year..

Great write up!!
I haven't lived with my 2005 as long as you, but I'm smiling with every ride. I feel lucky since I was after a cheap 2 stroke scooter, and the 16" wheel bonus wasn't expected, but very welcome.

My insurance was a different experience, as I have several other bikes and my People is only costing me $28 a year for liability insurance.  So far mine is being used for my 10 mile ride to work and quick trips to the post office and gathering groceries. So far I've put about 250km on it and I see many more km's added to the ODO over the summer..

Nice, Paper. My favorite ride has 4 hooves and a very comfortable saddle with plenty of carrying capabilities ( saddlebags, etc. ) .  ;)

I work with several horse owners/riders.. For some reason I'm just not comfortable around them, other than head scratching and feeding them.. Just no desire to climb on their backs.. :)

In Wisconsin and NO Harley???

Nope.. I've ridden several, but they're not my style of riding.. I'm a feet under me style rider, not a feet out in front of me..
The only "Harley's" that ever interested me is the Buell Ulysses, but after riding them I just didn't like the engine heat. Great bike that should still be still be manufactured..

As far as picking which bike, it's all about what bike will do the ride in comfort, but is basically the minimum bike for the ride. The big BMW GS will do everything very well, but I have just as much fun with the KLR. Yeah, the 400 Yamaha Scooter will easily make my 10 mile ride to work, but I bought the Kymco cheap and I love the thought of making utilitarian use of a beat up, 9 year old 50cc scooter. :)

And the 800 is an almost 30 year old BMW Airhead and I've been a BMW rider for 30 years.. It's not because they're expensive, but because they're reliable and funky.. :) I love riding this bike..

I'm with you on that.. I already am fully aware of the dangers that are associated with this pastime, thus I don't need to see anyone injured on a motorcycle, let alone falling down steps, or screwing up on a skateboard.

My issue is that I find the joy of riding worth the risk that comes with it.

I put over 500 miles on my BMW R1200GS this last weekend, riding with friends and gathering Grand Tour towns http://www.glmc.org/grand_tour.php.. While I love my big Beemer, I had JUST as much fun today riding my People 50 to and from work and getting a few items at the grocery store..

The BMW miles consisted of riding both Milwaukee and Chicago suburbs, and being fully aware of the fact that people are not used to seeing bikes on the streets (first decent weekend we've had) and the same goes for the ride to work, as folks aren't awake and while I'm a big guy, riding with bright clothing and a white helmet, they're still not looking out for a 50cc scooter travelling at 40mph.

Basically, be careful out there. Right now we have new drivers, drivers who aren't used to seeing motorcycles of any kind for the last 6 months, and to make matters worse, Momma Whitetail deer are chasing off last year's fawns to go have this year's fawns.. Last year's fawns don't understand why Mom is doing this and are confused. I see more deer hit in April than any other month, and they're typically last year's fawns.. That doesn't even consider all the skunks, raccoons, possums, and everything else that's just waking up after a long winter's nap..

So, again, be careful out there!!
