People 50 / Re: Malossi BBK for People 50 2T
« on: February 24, 2016, 02:05:31 PM »
I saw your thread in tech section, it's pretty cool! I'm thinking about getting the BBK too, is this the set you ordered?

http://www.amazon.com/Malossi-31-9987-M319987-2-Stroke/dp/B0057X6DOC

I would definitely like to go for 70ccm and as far as I know it should be possible, but it means I need to set the rollers/spring and carb differently. I already have pipe and some CVT upgrades and I'm getting 45 mph without problems but I'm going to start using my scoot for daily rides to work soon (it's 10 miles one way) and some extra hp would be appreciated :)

Yes it is really good advice I think! Makes me wish my scoot could have handlebar switch   :-\ I have to use a work-around, which means that sometimes when it doesn't start up I remove the seat, remove the spark plug and inject some gasoline premixed with 2-stroke oil directly to the engine using a syringe with a rubber hose attached to it (I always keep it in the tool box under seat).

The s filter is actually built onto the petcock, on top of it is a little mesh screen. Pretty good design and unless your bike has seen really nasty gas it should be aok.

Oh! Good to know that it exists  ;D

There IS a fuel filter on the 49cc 2t Kymcos!!!! On the people 50 it is actually attached to the plastic petcock assembly and it is notorious for issues on the People 50,

Damn! Is it on the People S models too? I looked for it on mine and searched the spare parts book and couldn't find it  :-[

There's no fuel filter on your scooter. Only the autochoke mechanism or fuel petcock (if you installed it).
Mine does run a little worse on a nearly empty gas tank too (especially when riding uphill) and I think it's a common thing, nothing to worry about.

People 50 / Re: Variator belt age
« on: July 13, 2015, 08:30:26 AM »
I recently changed mine belt for the first time. I rode it for 7+ years and 10,000 kilometers. I did not measure it, since I was doing some CVT upgrades and replacing the belt was "just in case" type of thing, but it looked quite OK. I did not notice any signs of rubber aging, no cracks and so on.
I would inspect & measure yours. It might not be the top priority thing to replace.

Check and preferably change the spark plug for a new one. Clean the air filter, you might want to install a new one if yours used up.
If giving it more air worsened the condition, then maybe you aren't getting enough fuel. I would check the spark plug color - if it's orang-ish, then this explanation will be confirmed.

Great! Thanks for sharing the solution  :)
Happy riding!

You mean it got damaged / you got a faulty unit? Maybe try to exchange it?

Strange! And how's your battery?

Often it will start up right away but will idle out after about 10 seconds.

Locate the idle screw on your carburetor, turn it clockwise by 1/4 turn. If the engine idles out I bet it has too low idle RPM's, so you need to raise them a little by letting more air into the carburetor and engine. It should also allow you to start the engine more easily. The screw is flat, with one notch, located perpendicularly to the ground on the left side of the carb just next to the airbox.

Yeah but maybe I exaggerated, for example in my case I changed the rollers only one time and found the sweet spot on the first try  :P

Let us know about your results!

Clean the air filter, if it doesn't help then clean the carburetor. Should help.

No, I believe what you are speaking about is the magneto. The air intake is on the other side of the bike, it goes through your air filter. It's just above CVT cover (the cover with the kick starter pedal on it).

+1 for Malossi & Polini parts  :D Go for it!

The weights and contra spring require lots of testing, it's all about trial and error. Remember that when you change something around the engine, giving it more power (better pipe, bigger jets, performance air filter, big bore kit etc.) then the way the CVT responds will change too. So the CVT upgrades should be done at the end, and their purpose is to give you the possibly best performance out of the power that you already have.

Once you buy all the stuff for the upgrades (variator, clutch, etc.) and install it, give the bike a good test run. For starters go with the rollers that will come together with the variator kit. Then if the engine will overrev, it will mean that your contra spring is too stiff / the rollers are too light. If the bike will be sluggish, it will mean that the rollers are too heavy. I would go for a soft contra spring (especially since you don't ride on hills).

I would say that you might want to leave the stock contra spring, like I did. It's very nice stuff. If your OEM parts are shot, I would buy the Malossi variator, clutch and torque controller and go with the stock spring. Then test it and the way your bike will behave will tell you if you need to change the roller's weight, and if so, whether to go up or down on the weight.

It's making me beleive they probably de-restricted  it maybe?

That, or your model didn't have this kind of restriction. Anyway, good that you checked.

Nah, don't be concerned too much. Go on with your upgrades and when you're done change the spark plug for a new one and then after some riding check its color and it will tell you a lot about your mix ratio of air & gasoline, which is crucial for engine longevity. It's good to start with fresh stuff so that you know nothing's at fault when it comes to yours scoot performance. Besides, spark plugs are very cheap and the two stroke engines tend to "eat" them pretty fast. Usually folks change the spark plug on a yearly basis.
