Technical | How To / Re: Kymco People 50 sat for 4 years.

Rust and scale in the tank could be a problem.

I would only give charging the battery 1 try, then replace.

Drain the tank, change the fuel filter, add a quart of fresh gas and give it a try...  Easy Peasy !  See what happens.
It may not be necessary to rebuild the carb and such.

Flat spots on the tires could be problematic, also. Integrity of the carcass could be affected if they went down and sat that way.

If it sat for 4 years, I'd pull the plug an spray a little wd40 into the hole before turning it over because the cylinder walls can develop a little rust.

Take it easy for a bit and be prepared for O rings and such giving up...

Just a final update for anyone else in a similar situation. I did as RedK suggested above. (mostly)

I drained and refilled the fuel tank (plus added some seafood).
Blew out the fuel lines with compressed air and carb cleaner.
Blew out the fuel filter/autocock with compressed air and carb cleaner.
Drained the old 2 stroke oil and added new Amsoil Interceptor.

I definitely had some old gummed up gas in the lines. mostly in the autocock and the line right before. I blew compressed air through the fuel line into the carb with the drain valve open. Nothing flowed at first but after letting some carb cleaner sit in it things opened up and began flowing again.

Once this was all complete it eventually fired up. It smoked like crazy for the first 5 minutes but I've ridden to work now a few times and everything is running well.

Thanks everyone for your advice and if anyone is in a similar situation just keep at it. I'm glad it was as "easy" as it was to get it back on the road.

Thanks everyone. I'm having a hard time tracking down parts though. Where can I go to find a new fuel filter to replace the existing? Also, does anyone know the ID of the fuel line?

Technical | How To / Kymco People 50 sat for 4 years.
« on: June 05, 2017, 12:10:48 PM »
So my daughter was born and my 2000 People 50 sat for the past 4 years. Needless to say I didn't do anything to prep it for storage. I just rode it one day and it then it sat. A couple years back I finally drained the old gas out but that was it. I'm looking to get it going and obviously it won't start. I've recharged the battery and put it some new gas.

My plan is to rebuild the carb and I'm also thinking I should replace the fuel lines as I'm guessing they are all gummed up from sitting with the gas for two years. My question is are there any other suggestions on what I should look at? Also does anyone know what size the fuel lines are so I can purchase replacements?

Any help and suggestions are appreciated.

People 50 / Re: Need Help with starting issue, Kymco People 50 2-stroke

Just in case anyone else has this issue I thought I'd mention that I did get the new ignition coil in (my local shop had one luckily) everything seems to be working great. It starts right up even after sitting for a while now. Thanks again for everyone's help and hopefully this thread will help someone else in the future.

Sounds similar to an issue I've been having with my People 50, after a lot of headache I believe I've narrowed down my issue to the Ignition coil. I'm looking to replace mine but it's another issue tracking one down. Also you may just need to clean out the carburator. I'd suggest taking it apart and giving it a real good cleaning. Seafoam is good for maintenance and upkeep but you may just need to really get in there and clean it.

Hopefully that helps.

Technical | How To / Kymco People 50 Ignition Coil Question...
« on: August 19, 2009, 09:34:24 PM »
So I need a new Ignition coil for my 2-stroke 2001 Kymco People 50. I was looking at picking one up on ebay but they mostly seem to be for 4-stroke scooters and I don't know if that matters. This one

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ignition-Coil-Moped-Scooter-Dirt-Bike-50cc-125cc-150cc_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem29fe14fbdeQQitemZ180356447198QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_1203wt_926

looks exactly the same as the one I'm replacing (the cap is a little different). Will this be o.k? I can't find any dealers near me so this is my best option. Thanks in advance for your help.

Just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for helping me. I tested the ignition coil and it's definitlly giving me high readings all around (coil, cap, through coil & cap). I'm going to go ahead and just order a new coil and cap and hopefully everything will be good from here on out. I am having a little trouble tracking down the part though so if anyone knows of where to get it (out of state doesn't matter as long as they ship to FL) then please let me know. I'm checking with a local shop now to see if they can get it for me but I'm not to sure if they can.

Thanks again.

O.K. I haven't checked the resitance of the wires yet, but I did go out and quickly mess with the bike. As always it wouldn't start so this time I took off the spark plug cover and pushed/twisted the spark plug wire and cap a little and sure enough it fired right up after a little messing around. So, I'm thinking that's the issue. I'll verify it later when I have more time to take it apart a little.

My question though is, where can I get a replacement spark plug cap and wire? Will any standard motorcycle/scooter one work from autozone or do I need to special order one from a website or specialty shop?

Thanks again for all your help guys. I feel like I'm finally figuring this problem out.

Interesting. How were you able to tell that it was broken in there? Is there something you recommend that I look for?

OK, finally checked the autochoke. The reading was less than 5 ohm (around 1.5 from what I could tell) Is that too low or is that o.k? Also do I need to let the bike run for a while first and then take the reading or does it not matter?

Aside from the autochoke (since it seems fine) what other things can I check? If all else fails I guess I'll take the carburetor apart again and see if that helps. I'm really at a loss here so any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Now how would I go about checking that and where exactly are those particular wires located? Thanks again.

People 50 / Need Help with starting issue, Kymco People 50 2-stroke

Ok, I've had my 2001 People 50 for about a year now. Last month after sitting for about a month the scooter was having issues starting. After doing lots of research I decided to finally rebuild and clean the carb. Everything went well and after I put everything back together the scooter started fine. However now I have to constantly "tweak" the scooter to get it to start after sitting over night or for more than an hour or so.

My wife mainly uses it for work and she is pretty much ready to get rid of it so I need some help. It won't start (electric or kick) unless I adjust the airflow screw. I don't know any other "quick fixes" to get it to start but this always works. I've looked up how to adjust the airflow screw and throttle screw and have done everything I know how to get it right. The thing is even after I adjust everything (airflow and throttle screw ) to where it seems perfect, it still won't start after sitting over night.

What confuses me is that the airflow screw needs to be adjusted to different positions each time, its never consistent. I'm at a loss with what to do next. Once I get it started it runs beautifully and will start fine again if its within 15 minutes or so. Any longer and I have to mess with it to get it to start. So, before my wife kills me and gets rid of the bike please help me. Thanks in advance.
