Xciting 500 / Decided to Switch
« on: June 29, 2010, 02:34:03 PM »
Hi Guys, I have just struck a deal with the Suzuki Dealer and traded my X500 in on a new Burgman 650 Exec. I have now done 6000km on the X500 and really enjoy the scoot. This has been a great forum and I enjoy keeping an eye on what the guys are up to and learned a lot as well, thanks. I have no serious issues with the bike just worried about the glazing of the clutch pads and the high speed weaving, but my biggest concern is that I am a bit tired of struggling to get any kind of response or service out of the local Kymco Dudes. The Burgman has been my dream scooter for a while now so I have decided to go for it. Kind Regards from Durban RSA.

I was a great soccer fan years ago and also played the game. Then when the family came along there was never enough time. The last few years it has become very commercial with the teams who had the biggest budget bought the best players and I sort of lost interest in the local competitions. With all the hype going on at the moment I can't really help getting swept along. I have the flags on my vehicles and am getting into the spirit. My biggest concern is the levels of crime here and the criminals targetting the visitors who are not careful and don't understand the situation. We will stay positive. Regards from Durban RSA.

Hi Rozz, Yep here on the east coast we are kept warm in winter by the warm ocean current coming down from the tropics. Further inland it can get cold, some areas are -3c this morning. Regards from Durban RSA.

They called late yesterday to tell me the scoot was ready for collection. They had the parts in stock. I don't really understand how these things work, and have never had the opportunity to see inside or work on one of these. I had a look at the workshop manual but this doesn't help me to understand how it works. The weights seem to be key to this. I certainly don't want to have this problem every 5000 km and I'm not thinking about selling the house and moving to a flat area so I'll seriously consider changing. I was chatting to the Suzuki dealer about the scoot when I dropped off the GSX for service yesterday now he's trying to talk me into trading the scoot on the new Bergman. Will be picking up both my rides tomorrow morning and I'll see how the scoot is performing. Regards from Durban RSA.

Hi Rozz, Glad you got that baby running well again. I sure feel for you guys with those winter months. Here we are in the winter right now and this morning it was 12c when I left home with a predicted max of 25c later. Lovely riding weather. As far as swopping for a "real" bike, well that's another matter. I rode my GSX R750 to work today because my scoot has that glazed clutch thing and as far as convenience, comfort, packing space, slow traffic etc there is just no better commuter than the X500 as far as I'm concerned, I sure missed the scooter big time. Regards from Durban RSA.

Thanks, I'll definately consider that a bit later, right now while it's covered by warrenty I'll just let them do it their way. I should also rethink my style of riding, maybe I'm feeding in too much gas when taking off and forcing the revs too high while the incline and weight is preventing the speed from increasing enough and contributing to the excess spin going on in there, what you guys think? I see an advert in the local media that the Vespa agents in Cape Town have been appointed as Malossi agents so I'll also chat with them when the time comes. I certainly can't imagine sitting with this problem every 5000 km. Now the dude tells me he doesn't have the parts in stock and Kymco SA is closed for two weeks for a stock take. I told him make a plan I am not waiting two weeks. Regards from Durban RSA.

Dealer tells me that he has opened up and had a look. He says the clutch linings are very badly glazed and this is what is causing the noise and roughness. He says it is caused by pulling off on a steep hill. This incline results in excess spin and slipping and builds heat which glazes the linings. Unfortunately my home is on the side of a hill and the road is a deadend road so I can only travel up that hill when leaving home to get onto the main road. Anyway they are replacing the linings under the warrenty. I'll ask to see the removed parts and try to take a photo of them. Then I'll see how it rides back and keep you posted. Regards from Durban RSA.

Had a chat with the dealer and he tells me they had a X500 in last week and replaced the clutch assembly. Seems very similar to how mine is reacting. They have collected the scoot and taken it in so now I wait to hear what they find. I'll keep you posted. Regards fron Durban RSA.

Xciting 500 / Bad Sound Somewhere
« on: June 02, 2010, 05:59:05 AM »
I think there may be something going wrong in my scoot. Last two days I started hearing something sounding different when pulling off. It's way more that the normal growl, a bit more like a bark. It's a bit of a thumping or bumping sound and the scoot feels a bit rough. Last night riding home it seemded to get worse so a took it very carefully. I had a good look once it had cooled off a bit and could see nothing visably wrong. Nothing loose or obvious anywhere. When I start it up and feed in the throttle gently as the revs increase past the idle it becomes a bit rough and thumps then when the clutch starts to engage it seems to go a bit smoother and quieter. I wonder if there may be something loose under those covers. It seems to be somewhere in the back section. I remember the original problem I had when new where it would seem to get hung up around 100km/h and they eventually replaced the whole clutch assembly, or so they told me. I'm not feeling so good about this one, just waiting for the dealer to open then I'll have them collect the scoot and see whats going on. Regards from Durban RSA.

Hi Guys, can't see any difference just looking at the caliper, looks the same as mine other than the colour. I'll check the part numbers, just curious. Looks like that topbox bracket is also just mounted to the rack like mine so I would suggest being careful with the weight. I see Givi has special brackets designed for our scoot to accomodate the weight but I'm not gonig to buy them because I only carry a 29 lt Givi briefcase normally for work and switch to the 32lt topbox when I need the extra space. I'm having battery trouble with mine last few days it strains to turn the motor to start and a few times goes dead for a second and the clock time changes etc. Makes me think there's a short in the battery. It's 9 months old. Took it out last night and put in on the Optimate 4 charger, the charger tells me it has "a short ciruited cell" so today it's me and the dealer. The Evoline what can I say. I'm a shark fan and also have a S800 and an S900. I use a full face for riding my other bikes and when taking longer runs. I believe that is the best safety wise. There is a lot of literature out there about the flip-up helmets, mainly about the hinging mechnisms which utilise space which should be used for temple protection and the consequense of side impacts causing temple/eye socket injuries, and it make sense to me. The Evoline is just for town riding and commuting because other than the obvious advantages of a flip-up I drive through a high security checkpoint which requires I stop and press a button to open a boom and at the same time a digital camera is right in my face and takes a photo. If I use a fullface they shout and insist it is removed for the photo but will allow an open face helmet for recognition purposes, hence the Evoline works for me. I accept the risk to enjoy the convenience. It is a heavy helmet, bigger than normal and not nearly as comfortable as the other two and it is very noisy in the wind as well. It's not my favourite. Regards from Durban RSA.

Hi TP, Sweet ride, it looks really sporty. I wonder if the red calipers are a higher performance brake or just the finish. I can't quiet see if the topbox is mounted straight onto the rack or is there some other brackets to reinforce it. I have a 32lt Givi which I have mounted straight on the rack but I'm worried about the stresses so try to keep the load light. Lucky the Givi does take a my helmet, I use a Shark Evoline when I ride the scoot. The Evoline also fits under the seat when in the open face position. Regards from Durban RSA.

Way to go, I love it. There's a few HD's around my hood and those dudes give me the glass eye when I zip past. I had the cheek over the weekend to pull into the HD dealer to have a word with a friend. Now this is their turf and imagine my pleasure when there just happened to be a open slot right in the middle of the row of shiny black and chrome HD's in front and all the dudes sitting around sipping whatever HD dudes sip at 10h00 on Saturdays. I slipped my blue X500 right into that open spot and walked past smiling and greeting the guys. My buddy told me to beat it because that was the reserved parking for the chairman of the board or pack leader or what ever they call the main dude. By then there was quite a crowd around the scoot and I heard some pretty tough talk about plastic toys, blow-up dolls and some really bad words that would make my mom blush. I think they were on the verge of picking up the scoot and dumping it in the trash bin so I beat it wishing them all a lovely day. Such a sweet bunch of guys. Regards from Durban RSA.

Hi Jan, Ja Boet I'll check this out carefully. I have decided that R2600 is my budget and I will consider going R200 over that. If they arrive at a price much above that I'll say thanks but no thanks. As far as the time factor, who knows, everything is crazy around here with the hype for the world cup going on and the country wide strikes going on who can tell. The wife works in the Port here in Durban and it's been "Gates Closed" since last Monday, almost two weeks and still no settlement in sight. They are trying everthing possible to get the containers in directly required for the world cup. The unions have taken full advantage with the world cup kickoff being just a few weeks away to put their demands out there knowing the massive pressure which they could bring to bear on the establishment. Anyway, we'll see how things turn out. Regards fron Durban RSA.

Xciting 500 / Re: question on Year my 500ri is.
« on: May 19, 2010, 05:58:53 AM »
Mine's also a bit strange, in fact I think mine was built in 07 (haven't looked) and first registered in 09. It was probably the last carb model left over and had been standing around in the showroom for a long time hence it had a few small nicks and scratches and I managed to get it at 25% less than the X500i. They're not big sellers here and the few that were sold the guys all ordered the fuel injection ones. Here In my neck of the woods it's the year of first registration that is regarded as the year model for all purposes including insurance etc except when you buy parts. I bought my GSX R750 early this year, it was left over stock from 08 (built in 07) and Suzuki was offering the 08 at 25% less and the 09 at 12.5% less than the 2010 model. Technically the same bike just different paint jobs. Anyway mine is registered and regarded now as a 2010 model. Crazy way of looking at it I think.
