Sounds like normal cam chain, gear noise to me.

Karl

So this is just normal noise right? This is my first scooter I own and I just want to be in the clear.

Anyone know what this noise may be coming from?

I've never paid attention to it, but has recently had me concerned.

Heres a video of me riding and you can hear the whining noise.

General Discussion / Re: How much insurance needed for my Kymco 150?
« on: August 03, 2015, 11:03:32 PM »
Reading these replies, makes me wonder if I should up my insurance to a full coverage vs my liability. Like i previously mentioned, I only pay around $75-80 for the year.

I'm still young(24) and don't want any early year accidents ruining my life.

You guys suggest I call my insurance back and upgrade my coverage?

I was planning on replacing my stock rollers with 13g Dr. Pulleys when I'm replacing the cvt belt.

Can rollers cause this whining issue?

Hey everyone,

I've been noticing that my Kymco People 150 is making whining noises when accelerating or decelerating between 20-40 mph. It isn't causing any performance problems but I do want to figure out whats going before anything gets worse.

I've done a recent oil change and transmission fluid change (less than 1k miles). Filled it the correct amount(not to the bolt).

I bought it a while back and I'm sure its due for a belt replacement soon as well, so it may have something to do with that.

Let me know!

General Discussion / Tuning people 150
« on: July 10, 2015, 09:36:04 PM »
Hello Everyone,

My scooter has been running a little funky lately. Seems like it needs to be adjusted for the new environment it is now in. I moved from a dry central California to southern california next to the water, so it's much more humid and wetter air here.

Can someone please link some tuning instructions/tutorials to me. It seems the air/fuel needs to be adjusted because the scooter seems to be running rich based on the slight backfiring happening when i slow down. I've tried adjusting the idle screw, but it can't seem to find the best setting. I either set it too low and after warm up, it dies in idle. or when i set it too high, the scooter moves on it own without any applied idle.

Thanks!

So I'm thinking of grabbing some 13g Dr. Pulleys to replace my 14g stock.

Again, acceleration isn't that important to me for my commutes. It seems like I just want to maintain the high speeds with less engine torment.

My 2010 Kymco Yager GT 200i (174.5cc engine) costs me $78 / yr for insurance, through Geico.

I'm in California, too. San Francisco Bay Area. Where are you located?

I got Geico as well for $84 / yr. I'm located in Santa Barbara, CA

General Discussion / Roller upgrade for People 150,need advice

So I have a completely stock Kymco People 150 and I'm getting close to the time where I am going to replace my belt and might as well upgrade the rollers.

If I am not mistaken, the people 150 comes stock with 14g rollers. Which ones should I look into upgrade to?

Most roads around me require a top speed of 50-55mph. Currently, the top speed on the scooter is enough, but seems like it works overtime to maintain high speeds.

I would appreciate all input and advice. Also, if you have any suggestions on where to purchase from, please leave a link.

Hello everyone.

I just purchased a used Kymco People 150 and need to buy insurance on it. How much insurance do I really need for this scooter?

Should I be looking at comprehensive coverage? etc...

I purchased it for less than $700.

Also, I am in California so I must have insurance.

Any suggestions and recommendations for insurance companies is much appreciated.

thank you

These are AWESOME. Last 2x as long as rollers, and "shift" the variator better. Stock is 14g on the people 150, and if you want slightly better acceleration get the 12g or 13g and you'll be set!! BTW, someone will eventually say it so I might as well: its not a MOPED, its a SCOOTER!!!! LOL just giving you a hard time. If you are interested in picking up a belt and sliders I work at a Kymco dealership here in Portland and can get you the belt and 13g sliders within a few business days, $95 shipped to your door.

I was waiting for someone to correct my statement....btw, i was just in Portland a few days ago. Great city!

Going with a 12-13g will increase acceleration, but will my top speed decrease?

Another suggestion would be to change the variator rollers to lighter ones. It will give you a little better acceleration if you ever need it. I would also suggest using full synthetic lubricants in your motor and gear case and a iridium spark plug.

Thanks for the reply and good suggestions.

I replaced everything with full synthetic(10w40 Castrol Motor Oil and 75w90 Motul Gear Oil, both full synthetic). I checked the spark plug in it, and looks like it still has a bit of life left on it since it was fairly clean and good condition.

Would you please provide me with some more info(a link perhaps) about variator rollers so I can look into that. Would love to get a bit more acceleration if I can. I'm also going to purchase a new CVT belt as soon as I get a chance because I don't necessarily know the condition of the current, especially if it's just been sitting around and not being used.

Also, any suggestions on muggy throttle cables? Mine seems to be a little spotty at times and I don't know if I should look into just lubricating it or replacing it. I have already adjusted the idle to a good setting, and plan to play with the air/fuel when I have some time.

You can do some led mods.
Life replacing bulbs with LED's? Any suggestions?

Wear neon clothing jacket, bright fullface helmet.
I own a 3/4 helmet, and don't know if I should invest into a full face. I've heard some bad stories, so I am considering it, but I do only commute about 7-9miles to work at a maximum of 35-40mph.

Mechanically sounds like you've done well. You can remove CVT cover and take a peek inside and measure the belt width to see if it need replacing and to see if its real dusty and needs wiping out with a rag.
Thanks, I am the son of a long time mechanic, so I know my way around may things! I'll take a look at that belt!

When were the sliders/rollers last replaced ?
No idea..... doubt they were every touched. When I purchased the bike, it was clean on the exterior, but internally, you can tell it had accumulated a bit of garage dust.

Quote
Maybe an ounce of seafoam every 5-10 tanks of gas.
I've only pour a little bit into the past 4 tanks, since the bike had sat for a long time and I'm not sure on how much build up was in it.

Thanks again!

People 150 / Re: What is considered high mileage?
« on: April 10, 2015, 12:05:19 PM »
I purchased my 2002 People 150 for $800 (single owner and trustworthy). They obviously were asking a lot more, but negotiated on price because of the age of the moped, even though the thing was just stored in a garage for a long time and not used.

I say anything under 15k miles would be better to look for since the prices for 8-12k is very similar to the $1000 price tag.

Let us know what you ended up doing!

People 150 / New owner of People 150, need suggestions/hints and tips.
« on: April 10, 2015, 11:58:56 AM »
Hello everyone!

I am now a proud owner of a Kymco People 150. I love it! Does exactly what I need it to do, and is perfect for where I live and the distances I commute.

I want to ask you all for any suggestions for a first time moped owner.

The moped has 5k(8000 km) miles on it, so first thing I did was change Motor Oil, transmission oil, general cleaning, new fuel line hose(previous one was a little beat up), seafoam(inside the tank).

Anything else I can do to make sure this thing runs 100% ?

Also, any suggestions on improving safety and make sure I am seen on the road? Especially at night time, since the moped is entirely black with some chrome trim.

Thank you!
