It's the standard raised attached seat 'back' of the GV250.  I removed it because i found the seat more comfortable without.

Hey, sorry I never replied to y'all. Thanks for your responses. I ended up just ditching the bike, as I was too overwhelmed with road rash and crunched ribs and other issues to deal with it...

Got in a spill a couple weeks ago. Scraped up but okay. (2 lessons: 1, wear protective pants even in really hot weather;  2, passing is never 100% safe even if asshole in front of you signals left because they may actually turn right. Into you.

Anyway, point of this post is, insurance declared it a total loss and will reimburse me decently for it. Less $75 if I choose to keep the old one for parts. I'm tempted to do that, since the bike stood upright and rolled fine afterwards – the wheels/tires are good, battery is only a few months old, GIVI box on back is in fine shape, etc.  But, I'm not a mechanical guy and a dead bike takes up space.

What would you do?

Alternately: Any GV gurus in the Portland, Oregon area who would value it?

In an effort to diagnose my starter troubles (see http://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=24446.0), tried bypassing the key starting and jumping the solenoid:

1. Took off seat.
2. Located solenoid on right side.
3. Lifted sleeves from red and black.
4. Bridged underlying screws with screwdriver.
5. ZAP! Sparks.

Is that normal? Sparks occurred whether key was in off or on position. No start, so solenoid is working correctly, supposedly. But is sparking de rigeur?

Update: Had a local bike luminary stop over. I'd like a second opinion; can you see if the below seems sound? Thanks!

After testing the battery that was supposedly up to charge from the trickle charger, and seeing it erratic and not appearing fully charged, he judged the battery faulty. But also suspected the trickle charger (a cheaper Harbor Freight one).

He managed to jump start the bike from my Schumacher lithium jump device. It didn't take immediately; several clicks of the starter before any rev occurred and it finally turned over.

I took the suggested 1/2 hour ride to get the battery charged. Tested it when I got home and it measured ~13V. I'll test again in 24 hrs. If it has lost much charge, he advises battery is faulty.

He suggests replacing battery, charger, AND possibly solenoid and/or relay.

Hey, what about the fuse in the battery/charging system? Could that be at fault? Is it easy to access and replace? I have the repair manual PDF but those little low-res black and white pix are not that useful...
