starter motor wont turn
« on: February 11, 2014, 03:55:00 PM »
Hello,
I have a 2005 Super 9 lc, my engine was almost on the point of firing so i keep holding down the electric starter for quite a long time (i knw i shouldnt have) but then the starter motor stopped turning. I can hear the relay click does that mean that i ruined my starter motor? Thanks in advance

..you're probably right..

..the magnets inside the started motor are glued to the inside of the shell...

..those little motors get pretty hot, pretty quick.. they're subjected to a lot of "load"..

..get one hot enough, and the glue can begin to let go, short circuiting the motor, or melting the winding..etc..

A member that solves their own problems. I like you s9lc.  ;)

I had a relay go and it would still click. So just because it still clicks doesn't mean it's not bad. Just FYI, I know you pulled the starter and tested it. Good way to isolate the problem. Two thumbs up.

About 7 seconds is the max I'll run any starter. Also important to remember to let it rest at least as long. Duty cycle is very low on starters. Seems like you know your stuff and probably don't need me telling you  ;) Just for other members that might come across this thread. Hope to see more of you s9lc. If you can solve your own problems, you can help other members too.  :)

Well good news the bike is running now. How ever i did a complete engine swap. Ill tell you the history since i got it. I got it non running and im pretty sure its crashed a few times, I cleaned everything out then after a few hours of work it fired right up. Then drove the bike and it just shut off. Cleaned EVERYTHING. All the hoses, the carb, drained the oil, petrol all the fun stuff. Ran it still didnt fire. I pulled the cilinder off and well it was finished there where some nasty groves. I geuss the oil pump broke? I got a new cilinder and piston for that engine but still wouldnt run. It would almost run so I was mad and i kept starting and naturally burned my starter. The engine had compression spark and fuel so i didnt understand why i wouldnt run. After spending alot on the new cilinder and it still wasnt running i kinda gave up on the bike. I saw a add online for a dirt cheap complete engine excluding the exhaust and the rear wheel so i just decided to buy that and i swapped the whole thing out. This engine is running has a bigger carb, which became a problem since the cap from the throttle cabel to the new carb is too small, for now i cable tided it on not ideal but i first wanted to hear the engine run before I spent more money on this thing. The engine runs great except when going full throttle it kinda dies out, it might have something to do with that cap thats not properly on but im gonna go down to the scooter shop to see if i can get a new cap, i already tried changing the carb settings but that didnt help. Thats basically everything about the bike so far.
