Downtown 300i with ABS?
« on: August 10, 2013, 03:45:00 PM »
I'm really set on buy a new Downtown 300i in 2014.  The one catch is that it does not come with ABS brakes here in America and that could be a deal breaker.  They have had ABS brakes in Australia since 2010.  It makes no since they do not sell them here with ABS brakes.  Has anyone heard when they will be on the scooters sold here?  Ride safe.

Bountybuddy, I,m also sold on the DT300 for 2014 but also lack of ABS is also a concern.Honda is introducing the Forza 300 with the ABS option for $500 more. I don't see why Kymco doesn't do the same. I have noticed that it comes with ABS also in Latin America as I checked out a Colombian DT club and most of their bikes have ABS.

Is the abs system a true abs or a reduction of braking power overall, on kymcos

Deedee,  I'm a newbie when it comes to scooter but from what I have read ABS prevents wheel lockup. I don't know about the disadvantages though but it is important to me as I experienced wheel lockup on my Chinese scooter that threw me to the ground. Perhaps with ABS this would not had happened.  But the question here is " why doesn't Kymco offer the DT 300 with ABS here in the States when is available all over the world".

If I can't buy a Downtown 300i with ABS brakes I'll buy something else that has ABS brakes.  Very foolish for Kemco not to sell it with ABS brakes in America.  My 2 cents...

Don't know about any other models, but on the Xciting it's a true ABS system, manufactured by Bosch. Speed sensors on both wheels and when it triggers you feel the typical pulsing of active ABS in the lever.

My dealer tells me that ABS is not recognized in USA at this time. If a bike has "REAL" ABS, it probably came from outside the USA.UDA does not seem to feel that ABS on scooters/motorcycles makes a difference. :-\

Not to put too fine a point on it, but your dealer is BS-ing you. ABS on bikes is very real, albeit a comparatively recent development because of the difficulties with making a practical ABS unit small enough to be usable on a bike. The important thing to remember is that ABS can save you from a skid, but not from a slide. If all your traction is available for braking then an ABS equipped bike will let you grab/stomp as much brake as you can and not lock up a wheel, you will slow down at the maximum rate possible for the conditions. The very very best of riders can match that rate on bikes without ABS or without the ABS triggering on bikes that have it. Most of us ain't that good and if we try we'll unstick it.

We all know this next bit, of course, but if you need any part of your available traction for anything other than braking, turning for example, then your braking force will unstick your wheel sooner. What this means for ABS equipped machines is this: A true ABS system will still activate at that point but it WON'T SAVE THE BIKE. This is because once unstuck, even for an instant, any lateral force is free to act, the ABS has no effect on the slide and you're still gonna lowside. For a single track vehicle, there is no antilock or traction control system that can protect against slides. That's all down to rider skill.

Bottom line is that with ABS you still ride like you don't have it, it gives you no extra protection in some loss-of-traction conditions, but the ones it can save you from are among the nastier ones, like overbraking in a panic stop where once the event occurs you end up with only three bad outcomes to choose from, depending on how badly you screwed up... either skid forward into the obstacle you're trying to avoid, lowside at high speed or highside.

The Honda Forza just came out in the UK. The dealers have demonstrators available so I had a test ride last week.
I took the Forza to a large private area, just me. Gave it everything then pulled on both levers hard. On my Like 200 I would have been thrown off. The Forza has ABS and CBS. I tried several times for a skid but could not get one no matter how hard I pulled on the brakes. On my last run I tried left lever only, at speed, and is still just stopped without any fuss.
I love the DT300 but the brakes on the Forza are mighty impressive. It’s a tough call. I had the Forza in black with the black screen and it is one good looking scoot.

I totally agree I’ve sent emails to Kymco with no response about ABS.  I believe they will start loosing market share if they don’t respond to this issue.  I have found other bikes that have ABS like the Honda Forza 300i.

I can confirm that the ABS on the downtown is a "proper" system. The unit is made by Bosch and works on both front and rear wheels. It has proven it's worth many times already. I ride the DT125i but the breaking system is the same as the 300i.

The new Kawasaki j300 either has ABS or will have it.  I've read it is a Downtown 300i with a different name on it.  Not sure if this is true but it sure looks good.  Most people that rode it raved about it.  Ride safe.
