Exhaust smell
« on: October 04, 2013, 05:31:11 AM »
I had the oil in my Like 125 changed just last Sunday.  I had the mechanic put in Castrol fully synthetic 4T  oil.  A day after I start smelling burnt oil coming from the exhaust.  It never smelled like that before the oil change. Do you guys have any idea what's causing the smell?  BTW I also had the gear oil changed.  I'm stumped. Thanks for your input.

Andy, so there's only a smell? no visible smoke?  If  its only a smell, there are several reasons for this... Too much engine oil will increase your oil pressure and oil may be pushed in your combustion chamber, mix with gas, burn and out the exhaust... Another reason are some ingredients in your gasoline (like sulfur for example) that is supposed to be filtered by your catalytic converter inside the muffler... If the cat filtering is already poor... these compound will exit the exhaust and might smell like burnt oil... For me, if there is no visible smoke, there's nothing to worry about...  What fuel are you using...

You may want to take a look and see if it's just oil that has dripped onto the exhaust pipe during refill and is burning off.  In that case, it wouldn't be coming directly out the exhaust/muffler, but you'd certainly be able to smell it when you're around that area.
If it turns out to be that, just double checking the dipstick is still tight, and wait a few rides and it should burn off on it's own.  I'd had that happen before, and within 2 or 3 daily rides of around 8 miles each, it all burned off).

It was a sunny day today so I decided to take a look at the exhaust pipe.  I started my scooter on its center stand and left it to idle for half a minute before taking it for a spin around the neighborhood.  The burning oil smell wasn't present during the ride (10 minutes) but there was a hint of the smell when I got home. The exhaust from the pipe is clear so I took a look at the dip stick area. Apparently the culprit is some oil that had dripped out during the filling process.  And that's the cause of the smell.
Thanks Vivo and MSL1 for the reply.  I never experienced this before so I was kind of worried about the whole thing.  Anyway back to normal riding folks.
