Does anyone know what it is for and what is behind it. Reason being I am seeing flaking chrome on it and thought of replacing. anything I need to be aware of when I remove the three 8mm machine screws. thanks

It hides the crankshaft nut that you can use to manually turn the engine to set timing and valve clearance. A little oil may weep out when you are opening that cover, but don't be alarmed.
