Kymco 150 Engines
« on: April 01, 2014, 07:14:01 PM »
Are any of the Kymco 150cc offerings with the same engine? If so it would help me look into the other 150 forums for advise and general knowledge (or even a service manual).

Also what is the model of the engine? I've heard that it is a GY6 but it isn't right? Just close. I've heard of AF18, AF16, etc but what is in the Super8 150?

I don't know the exact model number but the engine is similar to a GY6 but there are noticeable differences between the two motors.

They may show no signs outside but may differ inside...

It *is* a GY6, but you have to realize that "GY6" is a fairly generic designation. Most routine service (valve adjustment, belt/roller/variator/clutch, etc.) is common across all the related engines. Many of the stock electricals (starter solenoid, coil, etc) are standard. Something like the Haynes manual for scooters provides most of the information you'll need. Frankly the biggest issue is how to remove the tupperware without breaking things!

The differences I found between a GY6 motor and a Super 8 motor are as follows:

-Although it's looks like a GY6 long case motor, it uses a belt that's similar in size to a GY6 short case motor.

-All the bolts that hold the CVT/Clutch/Belt cover are all the same size on a Super 8 motor where a GY6's are all different lengths.

-The ignition pickup coil is located at 5 o'clock on a Super 8 vs. 12 o'clock for a GY6.

-The kick starter assemblies are different on both motors.  The Super 8's kick starter assembly is completely attached to the CVT/Clutch/Belt cover where a standard GY6 has a complicated assembly that is attached to the motor's case.

-The whole final drive gearbox is different on both motors.  On a GY6, the drum brake assembly and gear box are part of the motor's case.  On a Super 8, the final drive gearbox and drum brake could be totally detached from the engine's case.

That's about all I found that's different so far.

I've installed a different clutch and variator so those are the same on both motors.  Also, a GY6 pickup coil works on a Super 8 motor.

I have a Big Bore Kit that I think is going to install correctly.  I don't want to rip open the motor to only find out that the jug doesn't fit.

You can purchase a service manual for your KYMCO scoot here.
I purchased a life-time manual for my LIKE200i and have used it several times.

I also recommend Cyclepedia, it is very nice. Not perfect but the most specific service manual you can get.
And it has color photos :)

But can I print those out and take it to the garage with me while I work?

Just move quickly between the Dell & the garage - this is also good exercise and helps build short-term memory!

luigi,
I have Kymco_Super_8_50_Service_Manual.pdf (<--- click to download) but it says Super8 50. in addition I think a couple things are wrong like the valve clearance on page 1-2 says .08mm and then on page 7-1 it says .04mm. Yet is all this engine stuff for the 50cc? Does the 150cc that I have match?

Does the cyclepedia specifically state it is for the 150cc?
