Advice on modular helmets.

And remember that modular helmets aren't much safer than 3/4 face helmets. That chin pc isn't as solid as a regular chin bar on a full face helmet. I found this out myself when a short drop off my motorcycle seat resulted in 2 broken pcs of a chin section on a HJC helmet.

I know this raises modular helmet wearer's hackles, and I'm not bringing this to light to irritate anyone. It's just something to think about when considering a modular helmet.. I actually wear a HJC 3/4 helmet on my scooter. As far as I'm concerned, wearing any helmet is better than not wearing one at all. Most states in my area don't require helmets, and being 1 hour from Milwaukee, the lifestyle riders won't be caught dead with anything more than a bandana on their noggins..

And before you start bad mouthing me about these statements, remember that Snell doesn't test Modular helmets for the same reasons I mentioned because they can't pass the tests to the chin sections.

Good points, paper. A rider in my area had to lay his Vespa down at 50 MPH to avoid T-Boning a Mercedes that blew the stop sign. He slid under it and would have lost the major part of his face were it not for his full helmet. The face shield was intact with a 1" wide very deep scratch/groove from from top to bottom. The impact would probably have torn the shield off either a 3/4 or a modular. As it was, he had no face or head injuries, just very sore knees and hips and one trashed scoot. This was his first crash in over 30 years of riding and he's back on a new scoot today.

I have a Fulmer Modular with internal drop down sun visor.  I love it however, like most modular helmets it is pretty noisy.  I wear ear plugs so it's not a big deal.  If you don't wear ear plugs then you probably won't like a modular helmet.

The only modular helmet that I know is very quiet would be the Schuberth. Expensive, but loaded with features including bluetooth for music and phone operation.

I see a few pretty good deals, and they do a great job of reviews.
I bought a IS-Max for a former girlfriend and she loved it. She was a Harley girl who had to be talked into wearing a helmet (wasn't hard, since I said she'd have to find someone else's bike to be on without a helmet) and she really liked the comfort and features. And I think the price was reasonable, too.

I tried on helmets for days - I learned 2 things:
1) Every helmet manufacturer's helmet is a different shape inside. I learned that a 4XL HJC modular helmet was the only helmet that fits my head shape. - and I tried on everything in 2 big stores.
2) Modular helmets were the only type of full face helmets that worked with my spectacles. I simply could not get a full face helmet on without breaking my glasses - I needed the flip-up feature of the modular type. With my glasses on, I flip it up , put it on then flip it down when ready to ride.
HJC made my white mod. helmet - but I will hunt down a hi-viz yellow the next time.

Flip up helmets are noticeably heavier as well as noisier. I have a Nolan N104 which I rarely ever use because of this. Around town I use my HJC IS33 open face, and when I make longer faster trips I use my Nolan N85 full-face.  The full-face is a bit more of a hassle to use with sunglasses, but lighter and a lot less noisy than the similar flip up.

Thanks all for the info. I am aware of the debates over helmets. I currently have an HJC open face and like it but my blink communication system is useless unless I'm riding below 20mph. I'm going to look at them tomorrow. I figue at least I wear one. In Florida you'd be amazed at what people don't wear when riding.

I wear a full face helmet but I have to take my glasses off to put helmet on. Then put glasses on after I have helmet on. Glasses are a tight fit but it works.
