vitality 50 2T
« on: May 04, 2014, 01:18:13 PM »
My son purchased a 2007 Vitality 50 2T (2 stroke) with a non-functioning electric start system. The kick start works well so the previous owner never bothered to fix the electric start. Since I already know the battery is not the problem, I thought I'd take a look at the electric start switch in the handle. I removed the screws holding the throttle assembly together and used my multimeter to verify the start switch is functioning properly (it is). I put the assembly back together but now I can't get the moped to start (using the kick start). It doesn't even pop. What could I have messed up?

First off... It's NOT a moped. It's a scooter.
The rest I have no idea.

Sorry DannyW. Just welcoming you to the forum. You just got "jumped in".
Try the KILL switch. After that the electric start is controlled thru the negative wire that activates both the starter relay, and the brake light. Turn on the key, and check to see if the brake light comes on when you pull the lever. If it does the relay is shot or the 10A fuse is blown near the battery. You can replace the relay w/ a 30amp Bosch or Cole Hersey if needed. Post up if you need help re-wiring it.

Remember... It's NOT a F'n Moped

Good for ya.

If you sort out the electric start we'd sure like to know. They fail all the time.

you have no idea how many times people come into the shop and say "The battery is fine but the starter won't work", and it's actually a bad battery. Make sure you check the battery with a load tester. A lot of the time if you just use static voltage check the battery will be 12v but under load it drops. The next most common issue is the starter relay. Not sure where it's located off the top of my head on a Vitality, on the people 50 it's in the front by the horn. A little 4 wire black box about an inch tall and 1/2 inch wide. You can test it by jumping the two large wires coming into it with a paperclip or jumper wire. Possibly the previous owner did not know how to start it and toasted the starter motor, but this is not common with such a small engine. Start with a load test on the battery, otherwise you will be chasing your tail diagnosing the other items.
