Handlebar no longer aligned with front wheel
« on: June 11, 2014, 12:16:15 PM »
Someone ran into my parked 2008 Grand Vista in a parking lot. I had my handlebar locked. When I arrived on the scene my handlebar was no longer locked, and if I lock it now, there are a couple of inches of play in them that wasn't there before. When I drive the GV I noticed that to steer the scooter straight, the handlebar has to be pointed slightly to the left.

Basically, I am looking for any insight/experience this forum might have with this kind of damage. How are the handlebars connected to the front wheel? Thanks in advance.

The center shaft of the triple tree has a slot that runs down the length of it. That slot acts as a Keyway that centers a pin on the handlebars.

Two things have happened. First the pin on the handlebars has sheered off, and the bars can no longer be considered safe,
Second thing is the Lock pin goes into a reinforced (double layer of steel tubing) hole in the center shaft. I DOUBT the hole elongated... What I believe happened is the lock pin is bent to one side and is essentially loose inside the lock itself.

I would NOT ride the bike. There could (most likely) be more damage such as a fractured tree brace ect. Cart it to the dealer, and have them tear it down to see exactly what is going on inside.
