Possible overheating issues?
« on: June 30, 2014, 10:08:36 AM »
Well, I hate to report that my new GT seems to be having possible overheating issues. About a week ago while ridding I looked down to see the temp gauge go all the way to the right and the "H" started blinking. It did this for about 10 seconds then the temp went back to norm and stayed there the rest of the day. I did ride off and on for about another hour after that.
Sunday I was ridding for about 6 miles on the freeway at about 70mph, then city streets for another 6 miles. Temp outside was about 106F. The last 4 miles or so the temp started to go all the way to the right again and the H started to flash. The first time it did this for about a minute then went back to norm. About 2 minutes later it did it again for maybe 20 seconds. It did this maybe 5 or 6 times until I got to the parking lot and shut it down.
It didn't lose power at all and sounded and ran just fine. That morning I checked the coolant and oil and they both were at the correct levels.
Any info here would be extremely appreciated. I don't know if this is from the day I picked it up when the coolant was running all over the street, or maybe something different. Should I be worried?

Thanks everyone and ride safe, mscmkr

Check the temp sensor for the resistance in proportion to the temperature. Also plug and unplug the connector to the temp sensor and even put a dab of silicone grease on the metal contacts.

There could be air trapped by the temp sensor. Air can get HOT and will trip out temp readings. Don't keep riding the scooter though, you may void your warranty if they know you didn't pull over right away and shut her down.

I talked to the shop Monday and they said it sounded damn strange what it was doing. When an engine overheats it stays hot. It doesn't heat up for a minute then go back to normal temps. He had me check the coolant levels again, which were fine, and to make sure the fan is coming on. He had me run the motor for about 15 minutes to see if it would overheat and to see if the fan will kick on. No overheating and the fan worked just fine. I could hear it kick on and I placed a paper towel in front of the radiator and it sucked right to it. I wouldn't say it strongly sucked to it but it did.
After it cooled down, I checked the levels again and they were fine in both the fill tube and the overflow. I then took it for about a 20 minute ride and it ran perfect with no overheating. I'm starting to lean towards a glitch not an actual overheating issue.
I would greatly appreciate any input. I'm planning a trip up north this weekend and was going to ride the bike up there.

Thanks again and ride safe everyone, mscmkr

Do these things have thermostats?
Almost sounds like one is failing to open and close properly.
I've known car thermostats to fail to open, or stick open.....but not back and forth like this scooter.
Sure wouldn't head out on a trip until it's sorted.
Coincidence - or connection - between the 2 cooling incidents in this scoots short life?

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

If it were me, I would have the shop install a new thermostat before your trip. The most likely cause is water not circulating properly. An abstruction or faulty thermostat can cause that. Maybe the incident you had riding your scoot home damaged the oem thermostat.
Let us know how things shake out.
Ride safe.

The guys at the shop mentioned the thermostat several times. I think there going to pick the bike up today and go through everything. I will have them replace the thermostat when it's there.

Thanks everyone and be safe, mscmkr

Since you already know how to take the radiator cap off, league it off and ruin the bike for ten or so minutes and see if any air bubbles come out, squeeze all coolant hoses you cash reach and watch for air bubbles.

They came and picked up my bike a little bit ago and said it should be done tomorrow. There thinking either thermostat or the sensor. I called Kymco USA and talked to a tech and he said the same thing. I did ask if the bike had been run with low or no coolant would it cause what's happening now and he said it wouldn't. So it doesn't sound like it's connected to what happened the day I picked it up. Course I have no idea.

I will keep you updated, thanks and ride safe, mscmkr

And the verdict? Could not duplicate, possible bubbles in the system. They burped the system and tested it and it didn't do the same thing. I'm picking it up tomorrow so we will see what happens. I called a couple other dealers and they seem to think it could be what there saying.
I did learn one thing, seems that Kymco is putting a coating on the valves which makes it damn difficult to damage them by overheating the engine. That's a good thing.
Not sure what I'm going to do about my trip this weekend. I would still love to take my bike up north but I'm a little nervous about it. I'm going to ride thur and fri and see how it goes. Then I will make my decision.

Thanks for all the info, this forum is indispensable! Ride safe and have a great 4th of July, mscmkr

Update, (if anyone is interested) picked my bike up this afternoon. Rode down the street and on to the freeway, and of course........it overheated! Got about 7 miles and that was it. Called the shop and they came and picked it up again. There going to order a new sensor which will not get here until the middle of next week. So much for taking it up north for the fourth.

Ride safe and enjoy, mscmkr
