cdi unit
« on: May 22, 2014, 04:38:10 PM »
Hi all,

My lovley agility won't start. Buy its a bit funny. Because sometimes it does with one kick. But usually it is really hard and today after a test drive it seems dead. I have checked many things on it already and  now I checked the cdi unit according to the service manual and I got some silly numbers. So, it should be changed. But I am a bit ...concerned. I have a Vichy v97 ohm metre but according to the manual I should have a special one otherwise my measurement might be wrong.
Has someone ever measured the cdi unit with different ohm metre? Is it reliable?  Or is there any way to check the cdi?
I am getting good spark. is it means my cdi good?

I would think that a good spark would indicate a good CDI. ALL the Kymco manuals show digital multi testers so if your Vichy V97 is a digital it should be just fine. Most digitals including the really cheap ones like mine have very good sensitivity with very high ohms per volt on voltage tests and good accuracy on all other scales. BE ADVISED, however, the Kymco specifications are not always correct. Additionally, even good digitals are prone to occasionally give "goofy" readings. These are mostly due to poor contact in the rotary switch for selecting the ranges. A quick twist left and right should tell the story. So there is no confusion: disconnect the meter from circuit under test, twist the rotary switch left and right, reconnect the probes to the circuit under test and see if you get a different reading. Use a fresh dry cell to see if you get a consistent 1.5 volts or higher. test that unloaded cell several times to see if you get the same reading. Do the same with a resistor with a known value. This should generally PROVE the meter. If in doubt, take two electrons and call me in the morning!

Thanks Karl,
Been really busy this weekend I had no time to work on my scoter. But I checked it many times before posting here. But you made me unsure. I will check it again. But as you said if it gives spark it should be fine. I just try to exclude what I can and find the the problem why my scooter is not working. But really thank you Karl. I replied you on the another topic.

Please let us know the out come of this. My bike which just ran several days before wont start and I am not sure what to replace/check first. Its six years old so the CDI could be suspect.

Well maybe it is too late but in my case the problem was very simple. The spark plug. That was my second spark plug and when I had checked it was OK. Sometimes it gave a good spark but sometimes it doesn't. That's why it didn't start all the time.
