Play in transmission?
« on: August 06, 2014, 05:21:11 AM »
I recently bought a used Agility 50 and I'm in the process of checking it out and repairing/replacing/upgrading parts. I've swapped out the old worn rollers for sliders and that's made quite a bit of difference (in a good way). However when doing that I noticed that with the back wheel off the ground there's some play in the transmission. I can rotate the rear wheel (in either direction) about 2-3mm (at the tire) with what feels like no resistance before I feel the drag of the transmission . I don't know if this is normal or a sign of excessive wear somewhere in the transmission system (final reduction assembly?). The scooter feels fine when I'm riding it with no hint of any backlash in the drive system. I checked the rear axle nut and it's not loose (which would have been bad). I haven't yet removed the rear wheel. I presume it's a spline fit on the output shaft of the transmission and I guess the splines could be worn.

Can anyone with experience working on the Agility 50 comment on whether this amount of play is something that I need to look into closer or if it's relatively normal and not a sign of a problem that I need to address.

Thanks

This is a normal amount of play. Had you changed the final drive oil yet? How did it look, clear and honey like our gray and metallic?

I would go back to rollers. I tryed sliders and they ate up my vareator.so I went back to rollers.and got a new vareator.

What sliders did you use? The only ones worth getting are Dr pulley the rest are poor quality copies of those. I've NEVER had Dr. Pulley break a variator, installed correctly if course.

Thanks. I haven't changed the transmission oil yet, but I checked the level and the small amount of oil that came out when I removed the filler plug looked to be in pretty decent shape (not grey and metallic!).

Once I managed to get the sliders in the right way round, going from the rollers to the 6g sliders gave me about 5 mph in top speed (indicated 45 to indicated 50) and significantly better performance going up steep hills, so I'll probably keep them. It's worth it even if I have to replace the variator at some point. Whether I could have gotten the same performance increase with new rollers (the old ones had flat spots) I don't know. I'm using KOSO (Taiwan) sliders, which I think are pretty good quality.

I don't know what else has been done! It's been derestricted (CDI wire cut) and the variator boss is uniform. I haven't taken the carb out to see what jets are in it. I also don't know what the real speed is yet. I suspect it's reading at least 5mph fast based on it showing about 30mph going though one of those speed display radar traps when the speedometer showed around 35mph. The indicted 50mph is downhill of course. Not sure what speed it will reach on the flat. When I get the chance I'll do a GPS speed check.

Based on how the Agility feels at an indicated 50mph, I wouldn't want it to go any faster! In fact it doesn't feel all that safe at an indicated 50 mph. On my motorcycle 50 mph is just gentle cruising. On the Agility at that speed I don't have a good feeling!

My 07 Agility 50 is solid at 50 even 55 one time I did hit 62 but I have not been able to get that set up back I have a trail tech vapor speedo that I replaced the stock cluster with and it's dead on as for speed readings but I have not had any issues with the ride.

Damn that's not too shabby! Any mods to get those speeds?
