I wear bright colors too. I had on a fluorescent orange shirt. Did not help this time.
About two weeks ago I had a woman pull out in front of me. She had half the road blocked before she saw me. I was watching her close. She looked right then pulled out without looking left.
That day I had on a lime green fluorescent shirt.

I also got wacked in HiVis, and a yellow bike to boot.

Bottom line these things remind us of the "assumed risk" of riding bikes. People drive like crap and it's not they hunt bikers. They do the same stupid stuff in front of my SUV.

Always a good idea to stay to left side of vehicle in front of you and watch your rearview mirrors for someone coming up behind you so you have a 'way out' . May not have worked where he was stopped initially, though .

First off, I'm really happy to hear your OK! It could have been A LOT worse, a very similar thing happened to my brother years back, he wasn't as lucky, thankfully he made out OK except for a week in the hospital. I do believe riding is safe as long as your a defensive and responsible rider, the real safety issues are due to other irresponsible drivers on the road which you unfortunately encountered. They are everywhere!

The quote above from bluesin is excellent info, being alert (checking mirrors) and positioning yourself as said above so you have the possibility to evade a collision.

Again glad your alright!!  :)

I usually roll off the throttle 3 or 4 times each 20 min ride home from work in traffic . Any side street cars gets my full attention, while I cover the brakes and roll off slightly. Some times of late, I use my 'brights' to get their attention. Not a 'flash' of the brights, in case they think that is some kind of signal to go ahead & pull out on me....just flip the brights on until I'm passed them.
My biggest concern is approaching  a large intersection with a light and on-coming turning cars....will they wait or turn on me...and what about those right turners on red in the intersection? Are they going to move?

I will often slow down when I see this ahead of me...let my light turn red. Safer if we're all looking at one another while we await the light.

Saw a young fellow on 'clips' - with his girl laying on his back - blast through a big intersection & a red light, while I approached and stopped from the other direction.
.....about 12 bad things could have happened to them. But they made it through one light on their ride.
I am still searching for a decent looking way to add lights to the rear of my Forza. Something other than another big ol' Bestem 929 spoiling the profile of this scoot.
