Notching the Variator ???
« on: September 30, 2014, 09:09:21 PM »
I just learned a new term. I see people are notching their variators that extend the ramps allowing the belts to go higher  on the Vespa and Ruckus forums with some 4 MPH success. Is that possible on the Kymcos? with the Super 8 being my concern.

If so does this work with both sliders and rollers ? I can see this mod being useless if your belt already travels high enough and you don't the belt to rub the case.

Here is a link. Looks like a mod that if not done right can ruin a good day though.

I would have to get the blessing of a quite a few forum experts before even attempting that. I think our scooter are just too tight in clearance for that mod as some scooters you can remove the belt without taking off the variator or clutch. But I thought I'd ask.

I moded my variator , on a downtown 300i the sides are 1/4 inch thick, and you don't take out the sides of it, you just file in the slope a little longer,  and use Dr. pulley sliders, 15 grams ,. it lowered my rpm 1,000 rpm at speed, 60 mph. and up over 70 mph. it lowered rpm by 1500 rpm.   at 60 mph. 6,000 rpm at 75 mph 6500 rpm to 7000rpm. depends on head winds and hills,.  at 7500 rpm. to 8000. rpm 145 km. to 150 km per hour that,s about 94 mph
