new to kymco and two strokes- super 9 seems slow
« on: November 09, 2014, 05:17:47 PM »
Well,  I finally graduated to a real scooter two days ago.  A 2005 Super 9 lc with 14k km on it.  I was previously riding a horrible little taotao four stroke that was only dederestricted, yet GPS it was doing 43 on the regular.  My kymco has only seen 45 on the dash,  about to check with GPS later. Might I have something wrong?  It doesn't seem to have the pep of my four stroke,  but I have always heard that two strokes were way better performers.  The compression is at 91 with the throttle closed (oops,  didn't know) (I'm in the mountains). I had the cvt cover and variator off yesterday, doesn't seem to be restricted. I do seem to be rev limited at 8k though.  Someone drilled five homes in the end of the exhaust so I just covered those last night until I get a new pipe. Unfortunately I can't get in touch with the previous owner to ask about mods but was rumored that he was going fifty easy at 290lbs,  I'm only190. Any advice would be much appreciated or maybe an idea of where to start.  Thanks!

If it hits a rev limit at 8k that's one place your speed is going. Also check the belt width, should be no less than 17mm.

I'll check the belt width today.  And I guess I should order another cdi. Unless I can derestrict it myself like some other cdi boxes.  I've just beenabit worried about the rings since the compression seems a little low.  Also,  it doesn't engage the clutch until 4k rpm or so.  Maybe it had clutch springs put on it?  Ineed to get in touch with the previous owner..

Yeah with that mileage if the rings are original they're prolly cooked. Find a nice 70cc kit for it, there are some awesome l/c kits out there. I'm not entirely sure with the l/c someone else might know, if on the cdi there is a green wire looped to itself cut it or in plug the bullet connector.

The belt is about 18mm, the cdi is branded with e-ton (!!!) has a six pin connector with the two center pins empty.  I am beginning to see why i got it so cheap,  seing that the wiring is mostly electric tape bound together.  Iwas told that if I'm going to use it as a daily rider to just keep it 50, replace the piston and rings.  Guy said the bbk eats rings.

If you get a sport 70cc and do the proper prep and everything will last just as good as stock especially because it's l/c. That's strange that it has an Eton cdi...... I would order a new stock kymco cdi. But 91psi is pretty low

I'll definitely look into that soon.  Until then isuppose I'll stick to my four stroke that makes me look and feel like a giant.

Now something that I'm probably trying way too hard to figure out,  ac or dc? Every where i read that it is DC. The box is big,  like DC,  but the box has two pins  going to it's two pin side and it doesn't seem to have the headlight turn on until after it's started, like AC.
