If your scoot is stolen and found ... How to fix?
« on: December 30, 2014, 04:34:49 AM »
If your scoot is stolen and Found and it won't start.

For me, it was stolen and then found. Now I have a broken scoot. They broke the ignition, kick star and handlebar lock. All blinkers  damaged and allot of other, but replaceable. Front face plate ripped open.

I have had it in storage for about 6 months, but want to look at getting the scoot fixed.

What is more important to fix first?
* Handle bar lock?
* Ignition?

The question raised is how do you return a vandalized scoot to working order. I put some fuel stabilizer in it about a month ago and I can clean fuel lines and carb. I can get a new spark plug if needed. I just need suggestions.

I think this could be an interesting thread.

How do you get a stolen scoot back up to running?

Looking for advice and will post pics and outcomes as time moves on.

Thanks to anyone with any ideas. I want to DIY this rather than having it serviced by an off the books repair company :).

6 months of riding a bike has netted me about 20 lbs of weight loss also. I am fine on a bicycle, but there are days I would prefer the scoot. We have had a mild winter so far in Indiana, so biking is not a problem. I do want to fix her thought.

Thx to anyone that replies.

Lucky for you the handle lock and ignition are one piece!!! The set comes with all locks for the seat and glove box too!!! The hardest part is getting the old ignition out, they use tamper free bolts. Use vice grips to loosen then your hands. If its been 6mo since you got it back it'll need the fuel flushed, carb cleaned, and a new battery. About $300 at a shop or $150 yourself, all easy to do stuff.

Sorry to hear this. I call it L.I.G. (life in general)

first thing I would do is get a new battery, and jump the starter to see if it still has compression. If it does, get a new Ign. set, and see if you can get it started.

I bought a junker a few years ago that I simply tore the body off, and made a seat for it. This is my favorite bike, and I have ridden it daily FOR 4 YEARS.

Thx BettinANDlosing - yep will be flushing the fuel lines. I put stabilizer in it and shook it up real good. Along with a carb clean (luckily I have done this about 3 times, so shouldn't be an issue), I don't think the battery would be bad though. Last month I brought the battery home with me out of storage and charged it and put it back in to see if it would start. It didn't.

Zombie, not sure what you mean by jump the starter. My last scoot which was a 2009 lasted some hard riding for 5 years and then it died. Sold it for $150 for parts, guy told me it was compression. Bought this one, it is a 2013 Kymco 50, so compression should still be good right?  Just not sure how to 'jump the starter'.

Thanks for the replies.

Cool, yeah those little batteries really hate sitting unattended. If it'll crank the bike over, it's good enough to try.

hopefully they just busted it up and didn't blow it up. I've tried to kill my taotao and it wont go down, so im sure the kymco would make it.  i just donated my extra kickstarter to someone in need, i wouldve offered to send it your way so that you wouldnt have to spend any extra unnecessary cash if it is toast.

All I did was remove everything. Including the wire harness.

I cut off all the welded om mounting tabs w/ a grinder, and painted the frame.

Next was to run wires from the battery to a switch (new key), and a button (new starter). Those went in turn to the starter.
Then I cut all the wires to the rear lights, and ran grounds to the battery/frame, and the hots to the on side of the Ign switch.
That way the Lisc. plate light is on when the bike is running. Same goes for the tail lights.
Then the hots for the brake lights go to the same switch, and the grounds go to the brake levers. The opposite side of the brake levers ground on the frame in the front.
Head lights are wired to the same switch, and grounded to the frame at the same point as the brake levers.

It sounds like a lot thru one small switch but all the lights are LEDs, and draw 7 amps total. The switch is rated at 30 amps.
I never bothered hooking up the blinkers cause I got lazy, and use hand signals instead.

The whole thing, including paint took me about 8 hours. The paint is Nason,2 part urethane, and that took about 1 1/2 hrs to dry.

To make the seat I just cut, and screwed some plywood, and covered that w/ Fiberglass resin, and cloth. That stuff you can get at Ace Hardware for about 30 bucks.

I used the original vinyl cover from the seat, and cut/stapled that to my new seat.

I was riding before dark The hardest part was finding a way to make the seat, and where it would fit. Zoom the pict, and you will see it was a simple fix, once I figured out where it would live.

Sorry for distracting the thread. I have done much worse tho... about an hour ago actually... ;)
