Puking Gear Oil
« on: April 04, 2015, 10:17:28 PM »
So my Super8 since I pulled it out of winter storage at the beginning of March (1 month ago) has been randomly puking gear oil from the air box. Now before you tell me it's overfilled, let me give you a little history on this.

1.) In July 2014 I changed the gear oil (not the first time) with 1900 miles on the odometer. Never had any issues with leaking gear oil. Put in the prescribed 180ml which I measured with a syringe.
2.) In November 2014 I put it away for the winter with 3600 miles on the odometer. That's 1700 miles no issues.
3.) Pulled it out in March 2014 from winter storage and it has at random times leaked from a little on the CVT cover to a lot which consisted of a good puddle on the garage floor. When that happened, I opened the airbox and cleaned it too.
I rode it to work 3 days this week (totaling about 80 miles) and no problems. It sat for 2 days and then I see it leaking again. Enough to put a drop on the garage floor and I hadn't even ran it.
4.) Today I changed the Gear Oil at 4300 miles on the odometer and also cleaned the airbox out again. I measured what was drained into the pan and it was approximately 140-150ml. I refilled with 175ml cause I'm nervous I guess is why I didn't put in the 180ml called for.

This doesn't make any sense. The only thing I can think of is that the air filter is original and has 4300 miles on it. I'm thinking that it may be clogged enough to create some sort of vacuum issue and sucking it from the gear box? ? ? (grasping at straws) I took the air filter out today and smacked it on the ground trying to get any dirt or large particles out. Yes some stuff came out. Is this a plausible conclusion? Any ideas?

I thought about the air filter cause I rarely go WOT but I did the other day going to work and every minute or so it would just lose power until I released the throttle. I'll post that up in another topic.

On mine, I wedged a small square of sponge in the air box, (just beneath the air filter, where the gear lube vents in), just to catch any gear lube that blows through. Keeps it out of the air filter.
When I do my oil changes, I pull the sponge out and wash it out with dishwashing soap and warm water. Then I dry it with a blow dryer, and wedge it back in. Simple and crude, but it works.

I would go ahead and put a new air filter if I were you though. I'm at 4450 miles, and I just put my 3rd air filter in a couple of weeks ago.
But, I ride in all kinds of crappy weather, AND live next to 2 oil refineries, so mine sucks up an awful lot of crap in the air around here!
