Mine are covered with two black plastic covers.  There's ability to punch out the spots for putting in the sockets.  My taillight is the same,  the whole lens is red with both sides available to be punched out.

This looks like it came that way

Yet with the non original screws throughout most of the body I can assume that it had been torn down prior to me owning it.

I've heard of someone on a forum asking about a taillight like mine,  all red.  I just googled images in many ways and haven't seen one yet...  Odd,  but it makes me a bit big headed that it's not seen on every one!

I never seen the super 9 without those lights or without the high beam switch....(except the one you have) have you

I honestly have not been within a reasonable distance of another Super 9 ever.  I was close to one once. At the time I was having problems with my spark plug wire and I stalled in traffic two cars back from one.
