Saturday morning surprise!
« on: June 13, 2015, 07:25:27 PM »
Opened the front door to let the morning light in and was startled by a dark mass whisking by very quickly barely missing the front steps. Saw a truck limping by on three rubber tires and the left rear axle hub. Cautiously ventured out to investigate. Saw a black scuff mark on the front of the storm house and found tire and wheel about 10 feet inside the tree line. 'Bout then the driver appears on foot across the front yard. I tell him that I found his wheel. Then I ask him, "How in the heck do you lose a whole wheel?" He says, "Two." He also says he was just hauling 15 bales of hay and could not understand how this could happen. I asked, "Round bales?" He says, "Yep." I am thinking 15 x 1500 lbs/bale is....ahh....22,500 pounds on a gooseneck hooked to a dually pickup. Methinks someone was a bit overloaded. Poor headwork pretty normal for the farm folks around here.

Those wheels flying across the highway would have killed anyone on two wheels.....

Wow Karl, glad everyone is OK!
Yes, around here on my riding roads, I have to watch for all kinds of farming equipment turning without signaling. I don't hold it against them....hard to spot a scooter and they don't have mirrors.
Again, glad no one was hurt.

And, I'm feeling a little peculiar.

When I was twenty, and living in MIami, I was following behind a 10 wheel dump truck on I95.

I was about to pass him when I noticed a large white object stuck between the two left rear tires going round, and round. Just as I realized it was a mellon sized stone, it flew straight out, and right at me.

I ducked, and swerved to the right, and heard that VVVVVVVVVV sound as that rock flew about 6 inches to my left. Right at head level.

I stay away from trucks period.

Thanks, Stig! Zomb, I too, have seen the rocks between the toes of truck tires and have avoided them like the plague!
