Water pump fun...
« on: July 24, 2015, 06:21:39 PM »
Anyone ever encountered this? I do a lot of pop revving at times, hot dogging around. After a particular session I started hearing a grinding noise. Got it home and pulled the water pump, found this shaft to be almost rounded and the spot it goes into on the crank is mildly scarred up too... Great.
I put the old pump with the leaking seal back on for now, but I'm not sure if it will last long because it's shaft looks like it was stating to round also. I might do some more Frankenstein swapping on the two pumps to try to get a fully functional one until I can order a rebuild kit. Not even sure that the kit would have all the parts that are giving up the ghost...

If you were air cooled you wouldnt have those problems   ::)    What does the other parts look like? Are the equally rounded or damaged?  Is it possible the pump impeller got hung up momentarily at some point and the TQ from the engine spun and rounded it? Seems odd to me that a rounding/ stripping situation could be had;  I guess thats what you get for making all that liquid cooled power!  :P

The other part doesn't look so bad,  a little chewed up. It still spins my old water pump that has the leaking seal. I'm swapping the impeller and stuff tomorrow.
I'm really not sure what happened to make that strip. I was worried it was worse by the sound. I now don't get crazy on the throttle like I have a complex. That could've instigated it...

The old pump impeller and guts look great. Hopefully it's a quick swap so I can stop leaving puddles of coolant...

Im still trying to figure out how that can even happen as well. Maybe its that high quality Chinese steel I hear such rave reviews about   :o.

Must be. I almost think that maybe it was a bit loose and walked out a little, leaving wiggle room. But then again my other pumps shaft has signs of similar wear... I may have to buy another scooter and take this one apart before I destroy it

They must be parts that wear out. The rebuild kit comes with the two pieces that are beat to hell. I found it for thirty bucks! I should've done this a long time ago...

Is rebuild kit Kymco OEM?
1st and 2nd usually have an unfair advantage.  3rd is usually the best, can learn the most from.  paraphrased from Don Quixote, over 400 years ago, still true today

All the pieces look exactly like what I've pulled out and swapped. It's in the Kymco section of the site.. http://www.scrappydogscooters.com/site/mobile?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.scrappydogscooters.com%2FKymco_Scooter_Parts.html#2751
