Dealer range (on trade numbers & purchase prices)...
« on: August 07, 2015, 09:28:08 PM »
Been looking at the possibility of trading the Like in on something larger.
The dealer that I bought it from, a no BS type fellow, that does what he said he would do (he didn't tell me the bike would do 65 mph another dealer did) offered me $2,200 on the Like in trade on a 2015 Downtown 300i at $5,600 in change... $3,744 out of my pocket and my bike...

I told him I would think it over for a bit. Went looking at some others at Barney's of Brooksville & Brandon (two of three stores with a long iconic history in the St. Pete and Tampa area). They offer me between $1,000 and $1,300 for the Like and a generous (laughing) msrp price plus dealer fees on their alternatives (I was looking at a 2014 Majesty, a Burgman 400 and a Yamaha SMax).

Their deals (Barney's) were well over $1,000 worse than the deal offered by the original dealer (possibly $1,500 higher for the given items relative to average market price)...

How these people sty in business is beyond me...

A couple of observations.
First the Smax is not in the same category as the DT, Majesty and Burgman.
Buy a Smax and you're only slightly better off than you are with the Like.

The other is the Trade/Purchase price. The $2200.00 trade in isn't unreasonable but the $5600.00 is.
It won't be long before the end of year and leftover numbers start. If history is any bench mark the dealer in these parts will have 2014/2015 DT300 for closer to 4000.00 to 4500.00.

IMO you can't pay $5600.00 for a DT. Too many other options at that number and if you want a DT, I love mine, you can do far better.

I agree with a lot of what you said... The SMax isn't a Majesty or a Burgman 400 or even a Downtown 300i; but according to sales mgr he knows it will hit 70 mph with an average size man on it (they sold a few). I wouldn't move on that unless i frequented a couple of their forums and found there were dozens achieving that speed.
I think the $2,200 for the Like (even though it's almost brand new) is generous. The vultures at the other dealership were offering me 1/2 that to start their negotiation.
The Downtown is starting to look like a good fit for me. It will do 80 mph under almost any circumstance, which allows me to keep up with traffic flow here and something left to get the heck out of the way. The Downtown still gives me the light weight (easy to handle, easy to move around in the garage and no issue at real slow speed in parking lots. Hoping it has the nice fit and finish I have found on the Like... The dealer I bought from is a small well established store. I don't see him cutting the Downtown's price much if any (if he's taking back the Like at $2,200).
If I thought I could find a new Downtown for $4,000 I would jump on it and sell the Like privately for whatever I could get. Even if I got $1,500 that would still only put me $2,500 out of pocket plus tax and title etc. The out of pocket he wants $3,744 isn't too terrible but it wasn't attractive enough for me to move on it... Within 70 or 80 miles there are basically three dealers here; one in St.Pete (where I bought the Like) and two owned by the same family, one being Tampa and the other Zephyrhills... The two family stores quote MSRP plus freight and prep... They offer no deals... I'd be riding my scooter to Orlando (North) or Sarasota/Punta Gorda (South) before I hit other Kymco dealers... That said I may just wait (like you said) until the 2016 models are out and see if the dealers here put any 2015's on sale. Meantime I am going to ride the Like and enjoy that :)

Again if history is any factor I'd bet by the end of September the 4000.00-4500.00 DT we be available as close to you as Gainesville. It's been the pattern for the last couple of seasons.

I'd try to private sale the Like first for the highest possible price. You can always fire sale it if/when you find a DT priced right.

The Smax will need a long flat run to do much better than 70-72. I have no life, I test every scooter I can sit my aazz on. The Smax is nice but not what you're looking for if the 300 class is in the mix.

Here's 55 pages on everything you may want/not want to know about the Smax. Remember youll need to weed the fact from the fiction.

Yeah, I think there's a post here of a fellow who bought there and had it shipped. He gave the all in price I believe.
I found a distant Burgman and had it delivered. Worked out well in my case.

Sent request for out the door numbers from the folks up there in Minn...
Looking at shipping options this morning. That said not real happy reading independent reviews of the shipping services. As high as 20% of the customers have issues (some minor, some horrific).
The good news for me is I don't have a deadline and in the meantime i'm riding :)
