Am I over extending the Like's ability?
« on: September 03, 2015, 04:21:26 AM »
I've become weary of city traffic. I hate the congestion and the constant stop and go. These days I mainly ride back country roads. Most are fairly level with nice long curves. Speed ranges between 35 to 45. Lately I've been hitting the mountain roads. Love the twisties, but hate avoiding the debris from trees and landslides. Also the roads can be rough at times. I feel as though I be better served on a motorcycle like an Adventure or Touring style bike. Do you think I'm over extending the Like's capability by riding these mountain roads?

Ps on a lot of these mountain roads I'm the only vehicle on the road except the occasional beat up pickup driven by residents of the mountain community who look like the father and son in the movie Deliverance that had a thing for the sound of a squealing  pig.  😧

Reading your header, figured you were going to ask about towing a bass boat.
So, you've met Darryl and his brother, Darryl?
You are a careful and experienced rider of that LIKE200i.....if you're wondering...maybe you might want to look at a nice used Honda CB500X. Very sound and popular upright bike ....though not a dirt bike by any means.
Plenty of power for mountain roads, or freeway to get you there.
My son loves his.
The naked 300X Honda is a bargain, too....if it fits you.
Keep riding safe out there,
Stig
Ps, if the LIKE200i had more suspension travel it might ride rough sections with more aplomb....but it is a scooter. Feels like it might be beating itself up sometimes on rough roads. I worry, too, about that.

I've been eyeing the maxi scooters. If I go MC I want either a cruiser or touring style. Problem with cruisers are ground clearance so twisties can be a challenge if not taken slow. BMW makes a nice touring bike in the F800GT.

I really enjoy a scooter these days so I think a second scooter (maxi) may be the way to go and made even more so through the reading of the fun you're having with your Burgman.

I want to "come back" as a motorcycle/scooter reviewer. I want to have a cup of coffee in the morning and go ride all the new bikes over the Countryside and then write about what I liked and what I didn't... Everything I ever saw at the BMW shop (on Gunn Hwy. in Tampa) was absolutely gorgeous. I sat on the 800, a beautiful machine... That said the service dept. becomes your partner in life as far as money goes. There are a lot of folks that do a little work on a scoot or a bike, but the sophisticated machines (I hear) aren't easy to work on, and the shop labor rates are off the charts for BMW (Harley service dept. isn't a fun place to visit either). The Big Burgman (650 Exec.) according to my friend Bradford (he has one here in Land O Lakes, and one at his house up North) is bullet proof... He leaves the Burgie in the garage for months and then comes back and goes riding??? I sat on it though it is a "Beast" as far as size goes. One thing for sure the Mighty Little Like on a bumpy road will beat your butt :)

Hello Trout,
In my area there aren't too many Maxi scooters to reasonably consider -
45 miles to the nearest SYM CityCom dealer....(actually not certain they are still in business - really liked that scooter!)
35 miles to the BV350 dealer (and have heard poor feedback on their servicing & sales)
3 miles to my DT300i, Burgman 400 and NOS Majesty dealer - (w/very questionable service pricing!)
30 miles to a big Honda only store with left over Silver Wings and new Forza 300's.

Only one of these scooters had ABS, a good reliability record, is DIY servicing capable, a published payload of 421 lbs, left over pricing with no model changes ($2,000 off list), choice of two colors.....and delivery to my door. (although, for that price I would have gone after it) The Burgman 400.

The early versions of this model had a clutch with 3 pads - replaced a yr later with 5 pads. Long 70MPH+ runs require a close watch on the oil level on some 400's - depending on how the owner treated it during the first 1000 miles.

I love the 400's moveable back rest for this 6'3" driver. (5ea. 10mm steps) Two big DRL headlights. Big tail lights. Nice seat for two. Long wheelbase.

I've added a bigger Yuasa battery & tender tail, Iridium NGK plug, lower Ermax screen, passenger back rest and tailblazer bulbs to the rear, some reflective piping, and the Asian script. ("SkyWave" in Japan) And I think I'm finished.

Suzuki wants $520 for that stock screen - but it threw massive wind into my helmet so I replaced it.
The bigger Yuasa is security for my winter rides into the boonies. I figure EFI doesn't like a weakened battery.
The 489lbs is a handful in the garage....but not on city streets, for me.

The ride with any these larger, heavier, scooters will be a revelation to riders of our light weight LIKE.
I am so much more comfortable taking to these 55mph country highways on a bigger scooter.

They are probably all great scooters.
The Burgman forum reports that many 400's are still out there with over 100,000 miles on them.
That should be more than enough to see me out - till I forget where I live.

I want to ride my GTI like the rider in Stig's last photo! The only thing(s) stopping me are lack of skill, fear and of course my People is still getting broken in :)
