Turn Signal MOD not working for Left mirror
« on: June 19, 2016, 03:31:38 AM »
Though I read somewhere that one of us had converted the mirror LEDs to DRL, but cannot find it.  ???

I had prepared last winter two relays to invert my mirror turn signals into DRL. Today I finally found to time to install them.

What I did is, cut the blue wire for the Right LEDs and connect the relay actuator to this blue wire and the green return wire.
Connected the relay switch to the LEDs and get 12 V from the glove compartment power socket.
Now the LEDs are lit by default and when signalling the relay breaks the power to the LEDs and dim them at the flashing rate. In effect the flash cycle has been reversed.  8)

Next I went to do the same for the Left LEDs. Cut the orange wire and inserted the relay. Connected the other relay actuator wire to the green wire and the other relay switch wire to the same 12 V.
However the left relay is not working.  :-\ LEDs will light up, but nothing happens when engaging the Left turn switch. If I take out the relay and reconnect the LEDs all is working again. With the relay in place, I can give 12 V to the orange relay actuator wire and the LEDS will dim. Thus all seem to be wired correctly?  ??? ::)

Does anyone have a Electrical schematic of the Downtown 300i? I'm stumped why Right is working, but Left is not. Love to know exactly how the Winker relay is wired into the whole setup.  ???

P.s.
Seems like it'll not be too hard to add the dummy turn lights into real turn lights as well. All is wired including actual bulbs, except for the connectors to the front cowl.  :)

Not sure what the issue is with the left mirror but if you have regular separate incandescent bulbs in the rear for the turn signals then you can take the front LED ground wire and connect it to the turn signal wire and then wire the turn signal wire to power from the ignition switch and you wouldn't need a relay. That way when the turns (rear) are off the front LEDs would get a ground through the rear turn signal filament but when the rear turns on the ground would be lost making the front LEDs turn off. Hope that makes sense.

For now I've returned the LEDs to normal operation as I was running out of time and ideas.  :(

I've wired the "dummy turn signals" back into operation and might give your idea a try with the front turn signals.  :)
(Using the read signals is too cumbersome as I don't have a wiring skeleton diagram to find where to tap into them.)
Not using a relay might prove problematic as the negative wire for the Right LEDs is a shared wire.   ::)

What I might try is wire the relay in parallel with the front turn bulbs.  ???

Found the wiring diagram in http://www.kymcoforum.com/index.php?topic=7446.0  ;D
What might be the issue is that the left LEDs are fed directly from the switch and that tapping into the harness down the handle bars, is breaking the load of the rear lights.  ::) :-[
Will try again next weekend to test this theory.  8)

The empty fairing sockets (elsewhere turn signals) have the wires running down to the nose of the fairing.  The power is connected but the factory cut and taped the ground wires.   IMO, if you want the mirrors as DRLs, I would have tapped the power outlet, you have to be careful routing the wires to the moving handlebars.

I changed the empty sockets to LED turn signals and left the mirror turn signal wires as they were (still work if I plug in the stock mirror/lights.

Wheels,
What are the LED light you got to put in there? That is one mod I want to do this summer.
