zx50 stalls / floods out with even the slightest wet ground
« on: February 15, 2010, 08:33:50 PM »
My zx50 stalls and won't run whenever I ride it on even the slightest wet ground. Is there any way to fix it so I can actually ride my scooter on a damp ground?

You have to isolate exactly what is shorting out. My guess would be the spark plug wire. You can kill two birds w/ one stone by getting a high output coil. It will have a new silicone jacketed wire, and the chances of that shorting are nill. This is one of the times that ebay parts will be a good thing. The coil is about 23 bucks w/ shipping.

They just replaced the spark with a new one...Here's what happens...it runs fine, unless I get it wet.  As soon as the slightest moisture hits the thing it stalls out (actually, it putters out and then dies.  I then have to wait ten minutes before I can start it again.

I would guess you are either throwing up water from the rear wheel onto the spark plug wire, or you're sucking water into the cooling fan and it's getting the stator wet.  If you just replaced the spark plug, that's probably not it.  You probably have to replace the wire.  There may be some small cracks in the insulation.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Performance-Ignition-Coil-GY6-50cc-150cc-ATV-Scooter_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem414a387448QQitemZ280418088008QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories     It's an Ebaylink so it will not last long. Thats the coil I run. It has a CHEAP spark plug boot that I replaced for the stock one but I don't stall AT ALL in the rain. I have a '78 honda that will not run in the fog, so I know what you mean.

Have run into this problem with cars and bikes both.  Try this.  Get some silicone spray like 3M pure 100% silicone or similar.  Spray it on a rag good and wet, then wipe and massage it well into the full length of the plug wire, including plug cap and also where it joins the coil.  Wouldn't hurt to treat the wires leading to the coil if you can reach them too.  Heck, just treat any wires that look like they might get wet.

I've used WD 40 for this in the past and it works too, but I don't know how good that is for the insulation in the long run.  And it'll surely put an ugly etching on  plastic parts so be careful if you use it.

Plug wires and other wires can have micro cracking in the insulation which let moisture in.  The silicone will seal these cracks up if they're not too bad.  Might have to do it once a month or so but if you don't have the bucks to spend on new wire, coil, cap, this method might get you by just fine.

If it's moisture getting in the stator, you've got to seal that better somehow.  Perhaps a tube of silicone gasket ??  Don't know  for sure.  I had a "72 Kawasaki 350 triple that would die every time I hit water or rain.  Or even a himid day.  Sealing the points cover with silicon gasket maker finally cured it.
