Rusten exhaust
« on: May 07, 2010, 02:39:44 PM »
Do anyone have tips to make the exhaust not rust so easily ?
What tools and paint to use.

I live in a rainy country so other people living in dray places might not have this problem with rust at all.

I read sandblasting should be good... but who has a sandblaster. i dont.

Have a look here for exhausts that i have painted:
http://scootergrisen.dk/scooterhjemmeside/service_luftfilter.php

I tryed with black and transparent paint.

Also your suposed to heat the paint to 160 degre celsius for 30-60 minuts but who as a exhaust sized oven.
I have heated the paint by running the engine but maby the front section of the exhaust gets to hot and other parts not enough.

And tips ?

Man, you have done everything I can suggest...  I followed your process on the link you gave.  The black sure did look good after you finished and you used paint that should have easily withstood the hear.  650 C (1200 F) is really hot and is as good as any exhaust manifold paint I have seen.  Only thing I can suggest would be multiple coats of the black with the hardening process in between coats.  You look for something that bonds and give a porcelain finish, then again this usually has to be baked on at high temperatures.

...i never have let mine get in the condition that those pics show, but i sand off any rust, then prime with Rust-o-leum industrial spray primer, then just spray on a couple of coats of Rust-o-leum industrial semi-gloss black...

..that generally last for several months, then I do it all again...

winginman > Why do you think it would be better with multiple coats + heatings instead of just 1 coats and 1 time heating ?
I would think it would be better with just 1 time heating because i think if you do it more times the layers get hard and the new coats wont stick so good.... but im just guessing.
Also when i ride the exhaust hot, some dirt from the road got in the exhaust and and paint get "soft" when it gets heated so the dirt sticks to the hot paint i think so doing multiple layers my result in aslot of dirt inside the paint layers.
