Flaming LIKE200iLX
« on: April 24, 2016, 09:56:03 PM »
Couple days ago I checked the valves and installed a new Iridium NGK spark plug.
Then went for a great ride on a perfect day - so sunny and warm that I could wear a mesh FirstGear jacket.
After going downtown to the library and then stopping at Tim Horton's for a coffee on the patio - looking at my scooter parked nearby....I went on to the State park...got off and sat on a bench finishing my coffee.

Then I noticed a paper towel hanging out under the engine.
I pulled it out - 3 large sections, with a couple of big holes burnt through.

At one stop light I do remember thinking someone had their fireplace going on a 63 degree day.
Nope it was me trying to set fire to my scooter.

When I do the valves I put a paper towel under the valve cover to catch any oil that might drip onto the plastic belly pan under the engine.

See that paper towel......

My only excuse is that I waited 2 days after the valve check to put in the new spark plug....leaving everything open. Then buttoned it all up in a hurry after getting the new plug from the parts store so I could go for a ride on such a great day. Left the paper towels down there blowing into contact with the exhaust pipe. (and yes, I checked. They are all out now.)

What did I learn?
Do the work in one go, if possible. Living this far away from the equator leaves one prone to problems.

Yes very lucky otherwise a walk home and trying to convince your neighbor to sell you one of theirs they aren't using. Perhaps using some blue painters tape to the paper towels coming out the top into view as a reminder next time?

man, I'm jealous at how easy is to access your valve cover on that Like...my People S200 is a bear to get to...have to remove all the Tupperware to do about anything to it.

Stig, do you re use your valve cover gasket after checking valve clearance?

I have two new ones - but the gasket is just black rubber and well lubed with oil so it does not stick or tear when I remove the valve cover and I test it to see if it is still soft and pliable ...check it over very carefully and re-use it.
Then run the engine and feel for a leak before buttoning it up.

And, YES, this LIKE is SO easy to get to the valves - there is no reason not to check the valves per the manual's schedule (6 mos or 1800-2400 miles)

Not sure I could convince Progressive that the Chinese left their lunch wrappers in my scooter 4 years ago.
But might be worth a try........actually that Kymco is my favorite of the two. Too, too many years being a huge fan of Honda bikes, consequently Have yet to get that way with the Burgman. Well made scooter. ...but it's not a Honda.
Kymco was new to me....and love it's quality....value and ease of service!

Next checkout the Honda CTX700 and CTX700N. Not a scooter, but it has an automatic tranny option you can get.
