Modding the side stand
« on: June 02, 2016, 03:57:21 PM »
The side stand on my xc500 had been vexing me for some time now.
The foot plate was worn down on the one side, and upon inspection, the stopper when in the down position had worn to to such a degree that there is a 5mm recess there now.
I like to go to the flea market on the weekend, and the parking area is gravel.
The side stand sinks Straight into it, and I have to look for a stone to put the side stand on.
Me thinks : I have to sort out this short term ad-hoc solution..

So, to work:
I ground off the old foot plate, just the upper edge so that it would be a flat plate when finished.
I went down to the local metal merchant and they gave me  an offcut 5-6mm thick.
Next I designed how I wanted the side stand base to look (in my mind, I saw the HD, super long ones, but that would not work here, so a much shorter version was devised)
Then down to the local exhaust place where they are happy to McGuyver things for me that involve welding & cutting. They are a bit rough around the edges, but the price is right, and I can tidy it up later, the heavy lifting has already been done.
They cut out my design drawn on the plate and we worked through how to finish off the job in  a presentable fashion. A few revisions on the welding and cutting and presto, new base.
It looked  a bit clunky,  but I knew  I could clean it up,which i did one I got home.
A spot of black rattle can,  and it  was  all done  and  dusted.
Here are some pics.

Looks fantastic!  Good idea and good work.  Touch up with the paint makes it look original.

Nice job. It looks like your missing a plastic fastener just above the folded side stand. I've been looking at a side stand enlarger for my Burgy 650 from Dimotiv that bolts on but not sure if I would end up dragging it on corners.

Nicely spotted MJR.
I left them off on purpose because I was stripping out so often to sorry out the countless issues I have had with this scoot.
Once I am sure everything is stable I will put them back in.
I am having the left side resprayed as the scoot was knocked over, the story is in another post.

The,  idea for enlarging the side stand foot germinated while at  a bike shop that had these aluminium feet that screwed on via a ss plate on top of the original foot, to secure the new wider aluminium foot.
I could not find one that would suites my scoot(they were all for high end bikes anyway),  thus McGuyver to the rescue.

I hope you find one for your burgy 650.

I am totally lusting after a small lathe.  All these little niggly things just go away, because you can sort it out yourself.

Yes, some were like that with just the screws, and others had a complete stainless steel plate that covers the top of the original foot.
