My 2013 Downtown 300i with exhaust - My faults and what ive done

Hello im new.
Im from Melbourne Australia,

Last week i purchased a 2013 downtown 300i - 9500 miles (16000km)

A few days ago i picked up a Delkevic 225mm Stubby exhaust
Its stupidly loud. even with the standard baffle.
i Ordered the Delkevic Large Baffle kit that takes up 40% of the volume inside the can, this should quieten it down to acceptable levels.
In terms of HOW LOUD it is, i will post a youtube video this weekend with A DB meter, Stock exhaust vs Delkevic with and without Baffle.

Fault: Rear brake light didn't work when applying brake, I Cleaned terminals on switch, issue resolved.

Fault: Tub Light didn't work, No bulb.. Purchased 2 spares. (wedge type) works perfect.

Fault: Seat does not align 100% when closed,  Loosened seat support bolts. readjusted 1mm, issue not resolved..

Fault: Flat spot around 3500, surge / sputtering, reset TPS, Can hear the odd strange metal drag sound, suspect belt requires replacement.. This needs to be inspected further as i have not ever played with a variator /  belt / roller so i need to study these subjects to determine faults / repair.

Fault: Black Plastic is faded, i guess i can rejuvenate this with some Plastic polish / restore as its kinda chalky. Any tips will help but i do have some
Car dash board restore stuff i will try.

Fault: slight sorta head shake at speeds below 35kph. issue seems to correct itself, unsure if tyre / road surface etc.

Fault: Under hard acceleration from a stand still, apart from the power surge i do hear something funky happening with the variator /  belt. The best way that i can describe it is like something either getting caught/ slapping or losse, its not a grinding feeling it feels more like a shudder like something is being dragged and i can feel the friction, the sound i hear with this is almost metallic like when when you rub 2 hard surfaces together and they are both not smooth. I will investigate this more tomorrow.

Fault: Air filter looked like it had never been cleaned, I cleaned this and cleaned intake etc, seems to breathe easier now.


What i would like to know.

*** i'm a total mechanical noob when it comes to scooters, i know basics. ***

- What is considered the BEST power upgrade kit for a 2013 Downtown 300i? variator upgrade, roller upgrade etc?
- I believe this scooter is 100% stock Apart from the Exhaust i have put on it.

I will keep everyone updated (if anyone reads this) over the next few days as i post more pics etc.

** EDIT
After reading some of the posts form other members it seems i have this MAP Censor issue..
The scooter came with a 3 Month warranty ( mechanically ) from the shop so i might aswell call the shop and tell them whats going on.
I will try the MAP reset issue tomoz and see how we go.

The shudder sounds like a rear clutch issue. Inspect the rear clutch bell for bluing which indicates high friction. Check that the bell is round. Inspect the clutch shoes for glazing and scuff the shiny off of them lightly with some sandpaper. Hope that helps some.

The headshake could be notched steering head bearings. Put your scoot on the center stand and lift up the front so the front wheel is off the floor, then turn the handle bars left to right, it should be a smooth transition left to right, if it is notchy especially in the middle, you'll need new head bearings.

Update:

This video will show the Knocking / tapping noise i hear intermittently.

I reset the TPS / MAP sensor, test rode, no resolve.
Last night i had the scooter on its paddock stand and had the rear brake on while loading the revs to show a friend, we heard a strange sorta grind sound, i then had taken the scoot for a ride around and Surprisingly the 3/4500 rpm surge has stopped.

The attached picture shows the moved MAP sensor, i moved it untill i felt resistance, it seems u cant mount it on the other side as the underside of the MAP sensor is different. and can only go 1 way

If it were me, I would take off the variator and clutch assembly and inspect them for worn parts. Most likely you have a loose nut somewhere.  OR to pinpoint the source , you could use an old shade tree mechanic trick. Take a wooden dowel or something similar and hold one end to your ear and place the other on the metal, non-moving parts while the scooter is running. The closer to the source, the louder the sound. Be very careful of those moving parts though. It is kind of a "redneck stethoscope."  Keep us posted.

i actually did this, the sound seems to be coming from the left side.
the bike was sold with a 3 month warranty from the scooter shop so i might just email them

It sure does De. For me it works a little too well. The wood seems to filter out high frequencies so I hear grinding, tapping, etc. easier. I see we come from the same shade tree school.

Burgman guys use a heat gun to bring back the black - on plastic panels. Easy does it, obviously.
Have you taken off the belt cover and watched the CVT in operation? Idle it and Rev it on the center stand?
Some of what you may be hearing/feeling could be just simple belt slap which happens on a scooter.
I've read that clutch bells don't generally warp unless owner has been pulling stumps with his scooter. Glazing of the pads can occur when trying to ease away from a stop using light throttle. Some scoots really hate a light throttle on pull-aways. Need to jab the throttle to get moving then back off once under way.....gets the clutch engaged quickly without much drag between pads and bell.
Yep, use the warranty while you can.

Yes i have a video to show you all the sound.

It seems to have sorted itself out now, so i dunno if i was just me giving it some good throttle or not.

Either way i want to do a DRpully and variator upgrade as that seems to be what the cool kids are doing.
