I completed valve adjustment - a question
« on: June 27, 2010, 02:58:41 AM »
Thanks to all for info on doing the valve adjustment. The clearance was  OK on intake valves, exhaust were way tight. Got exhaust to 1mm gap. Put it all together and I'm getting some valve "ticking" noises. Do I have to do the job again, or will this noise clear up after some use ?

You mean point one MM, right?  Not one MM.

Mine were ringing/ticking when they were about .06 too big.  That is they were at .16mm. It wasn't till I got them down to .1 or so that they quieted down.

I don't think they'll quiet down on their own.

Hey, I went in to mine 3 times before I got em right.  That's 3 times putting the whole thing back together and then apart again! :D  Make sure engine is totally cooled off before adjusting.

Thanks Hoolander. Yes I got the gap spacing number wrong. I was afraid that I would have to do it again  :(  . Well, at least I know all the ropes to get to the valves. I'm thinking about one of the Kymco adjusting tools, seems like it could speed up (and make a more accurate adjustment) than a pair of needle nose pliers.

Right.  And it really is a "feel" with the feeler gauges.  The gauge should be really snug in the gap to the point where it's got some considerable drag on it when adjusted right.  It should be very difficult to get back into the gap once pulled out.

The gauges I bought have a tapered end so you can get one started in -- then kinda tell where it gets snug.

...yup...what he said..

..the spec on my a50 is listed as .04mm...

..i recently found a variance that states .04 -.06mm...

..it really is a feel, as it's very difficult to adjust to .04mm without destroying the feeler gauge...
