cvt roller question ( doctor pulley sliding rollers )

i have a 2002 kymco 50cc cobra racer i just installed a set of doctor pulleys 16x3 6.5 gram sliding rollers now when i take off the engine revs like hell and the take off is way worse then it was with the round rollers and top speed isnt any better than the round rollers
did i install the wrong weights????   im not sure what weight the ones were that were in it, the cvt is all so derestricted

Chances are you installed the sliders incorrectly or they shifted during installation. I would recommend you pull them out, and carefully look at the installation pictures, and put them back in. Be careful to hold the variator together when you install it back into you scooter to prevent the sliders from changing positions. I am not a big fan of the sliders. My personal experience is that they may "feel" better in a particular rpm range but in reality do not perform better than rollers.

The original rollers are 8.5 gram, so I think the 6.5 sliders may be a little too light. If the rollers performed better, that's what I would go with. Hope that helps ya. BTW, I hadn't heard of the Cobra before. Cool little scooter!

I like the Sliders better than rollers in fact bout to order a new set my guess is you got to light a set and so it's not pushing variator all the way out and revving higher than it should.

My Slipping Sliders to fast for your rock n rollers and you gotta change your oil when it gets old mines forver young cuz I burn it!!!!!!

If the stock rollers were 8.5 gram as Mr. Paul said then about 7.5 gram would be closest to 10% lighter that most people use as a guide. Also as suggested they may have been put in right but slipped out of place/flipped if tension wasn't held putting it back together was what I think Mr. Paul was getting at.

Not sure what kind of magic the sliders can do with a small scooter engine.....seems like not much extra to borrow  from on either end of the rev range....but on big scoots will lower revs at highway speeds.

Stig, considering there's really no substitute for displacement, smaller contenders must go to ratio changes to stay in the game.
Change in the variator, and clutch, will allow a higher rpm for a start, and more initial speed out of the gate, and, the dreaded hills.
All those minor considerations of power to weight ratio kinda go away with displacement.  :-)
Double bonus if the configuration allows a closer ratio at full rpm for those glorious long, level straight-a-ways with a tailwind!
