Transmission cleaning / rusty spring question
« on: May 24, 2017, 11:51:07 PM »
There's belt dust everywhere in my transmission. I was thinking of loosing it with a bottle brush, blowing it out, and wiping down all the surfaces with acetone. Inside of the transmission case, pulley surfaces (even those these are pretty clean), variator ramps, clutch bell, etc. Good idea?

Also, I noticed that the clutch spring is rusty. Is this something I should worry about?

Cleaning out while inspecting at regular intervals is a good idea.

Im a over cleaner. I go threw my scoot 2 or 3 times a year. Just to make sure things are ok. A clean scoot is a happy scoot.Plus its better to have all the parts that needs oiled up.and the ones that needs cleaned. As far as the transmission. You can clean out with carb cleaner. And then blow clean. the spring spray with wd 40 then let soak a few and blow clean.

You can only do good by cleaning in there like you proposed. I wouldn't be too concerned about the springs as long as the scooter is performing well. The heat in the clutch system seems to discolor them.

The dust from the clutch will affect the color. To clean it use brake cleaner if you dont disaseble the clutch.
In real life with a rutine cleaning with brake clener and a compressed air gun it keeps it ok!

There's belt dust everywhere in my transmission.
Simple Green won't kill the grass.  Use various brushes with a little "elbow grease".

Belt dust is a wear indicator.
If excessive, perhaps the belts should be replaced ?

The Simple Green sounds like a Great idea!
If using compressed air, definitely protect your airbags !
( I failed to do so, for many years, and now pay that toll. )

I'd say using a good filtered vacuum with a brush to minimize air borne dust would be a good idea.

Thanks for all the advice.

I ended up using a thin strip of wood to scrape away as much as I could. The bottle brush has a narrow and fat end, and ended up working pretty well. And the acetone seemed to work okay.

I didn't try to get every last spect of dust from the case, but I did cleaner the variator components very thoroughly, with acetone, bottle brush, shop towels, and cotton swabs. I'm sure all the gunk must have been affecting the performance.

I didn't really want to spray anything else in there. I wasn't sure if it would leave anything behind (especially with the simple green, and I heard one report saying that brake cleaner leaves antisqueal stuff). Also carburetor cleaner is scary and burns and might find its way into the bearings.

I did try cleaning a slider with simple green, but it didn't seem to be working and I used melamine foam / magic erasers instead which worked. Simple green didn't seem to do anything for the stains in my sink either after attempting to wash my hands, but goo gone worked.

I don't have an air compressor, but that definitely would have helped. As it was, I probably should have used a respirator anyways, but didn't.

As for the spring, I dry brushed it but otherwise left it alone. I'm pretty sure it's rust though, not dust from the clutch pads.

If its been more then 3 years I would just replace both clutch and vereator. things only last so long.
