I'm a visual person so I generally go to Google maps and use the satellite view to spot landmarks that I add to my written directions along with a visual map.
I then commit a few things to memory, and keep an eye out for them. The only major problem is if Google maps is put of date, and there's been construction and changes to things on the route you're following. GPS may be good of that, but I also just pull over and ask for direction. Locals are more up to date than GPS.
