Well, this didn't work
« on: April 25, 2018, 12:57:10 AM »
Tried mightily to make these helmet mount mirrors work on my Liberty.
Added the 2" blind spot mirrors to broaden the rear view.
I found that I could not pick out a car coming behind me unless they had their headlights on - and then, just barely.
The mirror is too small, and too far away from my eyes. In the stock Vespa/Piaggio mirrors I can see nothing but elbows, and billet extenders are ugly and have too many flex joints with these mirrors. Been there, done that.

Peeled them off and have ordered some 3" convex mirrors.
I picked up a 2nd set of these Vespa mirrors for $20 ea. and will look for a machine shop who can add 1.5" to the center of the mirror stems this summer, then I can get rid of add-ons.
Every scooter I've owned required altering the stock mirrors. This Piaggio has proven a problem.
I am a big fan of seeing what's coming at me from back there.....and even on the speedy Burgman I found I couldn't outrun an Ohio soccer mom or grumpy guy in a truck.

Have you thought of using the long vespa mirrors like those on your Like? Maybe see if there are black ones out there somewhere.

Yeah, I'm keeping those in mind.....they are just so goofy looking. But, I  tellya, having them right up there so high & close to my forward line of sight - is great! A flick of the eye and I can see everything, no head movement needed at all.

Stig: Have you seen "Mirror Extenders" ?

This was just the first of thousands of links on a quick Google search for "Motorcycle Mirror Extenders" and there are multiple types and finishes.

Might be something to look into...
Two things to consider...
1) The early bird might get the worm, but the second mouse always gets the cheese.
2) Eagles may soar, but weasels never get sucked into jet engines.

I think he tried that before and found that they vibrated out of position. Some threadlocker might be worth a try though.

Yeah, just too many joints, and not nice to my eye....and it all hinges too much on being snug in the small 8mm hole in the brake lever, which is buried in the panel, and reverse threaded!
Piaggio/Vespa uses a cool system of an 8mm stem to position the mirror, then it is locked in place by a long, thick nutted collar threaded near the bottom of the stem. Makes for a very simple and secure install....unless you need to use extensions! Then it all gets sideways. Going to see a machinist with my spare set of Vespa mirrors.
