Just a Simple Gear Oil Change???
« on: June 26, 2010, 03:49:34 PM »
I tried to change my transmission gear oil myself for the first time today. The manual says it takes 0.18 L so I saved what I drained and it was the right amount. The manual also says, to check oil level, look through the fill hole and the oil should be up to the brim of the hole. This said to me you can fill to overflowing. I added new oil with the squeeze bottle it came in, and periodically checked the amount I added where it's indicated on the side of the bottle. Got to about 0.18 L and couldn't see any oil at the brim of the hole. Added more and saw none. Still more and still saw none. When I got done adding and looking I had about 0.5 L in it. Not good! I drained it all out and refilled with 0.18 L. Took'er for a spin and seems OK. Not knowing the innards of the beast, did I screw anything up?

I managed to add 4 dl of gear oil into my Agility 125 during the change. Drained half and that's it.
I wonder when it would start overfilling, after a gallon maybe?

I worked at certain places where they had tech writers who wrote the manuals, and got their info be talking to the engineers since they had no direct knowledge of what they were writing about. That might be what happened here. Checking for oil level  up to the brim of the fill hole can't be right.

...i've been in the industrial maintenance field since 88...

..in every case..where there isn't a "sight glass" or other visual indicator...

..gearboxes are always filled until the fluid runs from the fill port...

..allow the fluid to "stop" draining, seal the port, and the level should be within the margin of error...

..i'm just sayin...

Hi all,
I had this same problem re: the gear oil. After calling around (including a call to KYMCO USA), I found that the amount in the maual is correct. Do not fill all the way to the drain plug as you will be adding about 3X the needed oil and run the possability of blowing a seal.
